Paperwork-reducing magic items

Paperwork-reducing magic items

Unread postby bibliophile20 » May 10th, 2008, 7:09 pm

Alright, here's the question: Does anyone have any ideas for D&D magic items that help reduce the paperwork for the player and/or the GM?

For examples, I was devising a self-reloading, self-winding crossbow; the player will think it's sweet, because the thing reloads itself and because he doesn't have to keep track of ammo expenditure, and the GM and the player have one less headache to worry about when the players go shopping and having to keep track of their money. Endless bags of caltrops also help in a similar way, while bags of holding make dealing with encumbrance a thing of the past (not that anyone bothers to begin with).

So, does any else have any examples or ideas for items that make keeping track of the minutia of gameplay easier?

Perhaps some "magic clothes" that change to suit the wearer's taste each day, so Fael doesn't have to keep track of how many dresses she's bought? =)

Oh, and a needle and thread that casts a once a day 'Mend' on ripped and torn clothes.

For Ptolus campaigns, perhaps "ever clean" boots, that repel mud, and other unmentionable noxious substances ... and that change size from ankle length to "over the knee" length if you step in a really big puddle of .. goo .. in the sewer?

Hmm.. maybe a retractable ten foot pole? I guess that would be something rod shaped for storage.

Endless Quiver

This quiver appears to have twenty arrow shafts in it. When you pull an arrow, the number of arrows does not reduce. Each arrow, once drawn from the quiver, only lasts one round. Each arrow is a standard wooden arrow.

Moderate Conjuration, CL 9, Create Wondrous Item, Major Creation. Price: 10,000. Creation, 5000g, 400xp.

The Endless quiver can be modified to draw arrows of different materials, each of which adds an additional cost onto the Endless Quiver.

Adamantine arrows: 10,000g additional
Mithral Arrows: 6,000g additional
Cold Iron Arrows: 8,000g additional
Silver arrows: 6,000g additional. These arrows do one less damage than normal, to a minimum of 1.

Calculating enumbrance is a pain in the rear.

Bags of holding work well here. Do you know how much 20,000 gp weighs?
Portable Holes for really bulky loot. Like suits of magical armor.

Belt of Pouches and Heward's Handy Haversack and better for holding adventuring gear, especially consumables, because the specific rules for those items state that any item stored within can be retrieved almost instantly. (No more adjudicating how long it takes to dig it out of the bottom of your backpack.)

Murlynd's Spoon means not having to worry about keeping track of rations. Ditto for Flasks of Alchemy flasks and drinking water.

Eternal wands are 2/day items that can cast a 1st-3rd level spell. No worrying about keeping track of charges on a long-term basis.

Ditto with Runestaffs that convert wielder spell slots into magical effects, rather than using charges.

Hey! I'll have you know that Fael already has a couple of those. She keeps our slave... er dwarven craftsman busy making more of them as needed.

Hmmm... good idea, I'll have work out the stats on such an item immediately. It's obvious that Fael needs an update to her wardrobe because that item is far more convenient than spending cantrips to use prestidigitation constantly. Thanks for the idea!

That could be a good idea, though perhaps an instant summon mallet with an extensible handle for use in dealing with a certain perverted dwarf and his robotic peeping assistants would be better.

I'd rather have glowing eyes of doom than random hammer, myself. At least for a character. In real life, the ability to carry stuff without it taking an actual space? If only...

Think plural.

There are reasons I always play a warlock in 3rd edition.

Yep. It's even worse when he plays a gestalt monk/warlock.

Nah, I think that custom paladin/warlock gestalt was the nastiest thing I ever put together. Though Galveras the Monk/Warlock was pretty nasty too.

Well, the fact that Galveras seemed to think he was a character from Street Fighter (and had the skills to back it up) does tend to support that view.

Do you mean a character with multiple anime tropes?

Or multiple characters, each with an anime trope?

Either way means your campaign is awesome, but I'm just curious now.
