XCOM Enemy Unknown Discussion (warning: spoilers)

So, it came out today, and I know several of us have it. :D

I had a hilariously near fuck up on one mission. One alien left, and I have an assault with run and gun. So I send the assault dashing up to the other side of the corner the alien is hiding behind so I can shotgun it at point blank range. At which point I realize that I did not activate the ability first. Luckily, my two XCOM guys that didn't move yet managed to down the alien before it got a turn to slaughter my operative.

Current status: Satellites over Canada, Germany, and Egypt. Russia and South Africa are panicking, and I can't get enough alien alloy to build everything I need. D:

Amusing note: my first sniper was nicknamed 'Zero'. :rollin:

Bought the game on sunday, been playing alot. I'm really enjoying it. So far I've got a pool of 9 or 10 vets, the highest a colonel, the lowest a Corporal, named after various forumites and people I chat with on skype. I've had no deaths so far, and am being exceedingly careful to keep it that way.

I really need to start getting more sattelites up, but am lacking in Alloy to build a Nexus. Which is kind of frustrating. My Stungunner Support trooper Drychnath has been doing really well, successfully capturing many an alien. Though he has ALWAYS ended those missions at 1 hp. I get the feeling he keeps making stupid bets with his squadmates.

"I bet you a months supply of beer you don't have the stones to go taze that thing."

"You're on. CHARGE!"

On the plus side though, he will never, ever have to buy his own beer.

Situation:

One soldier down, but stabilized. All the rest take positions near the alien craft. Out of five remaining soldiers there are three rookies.

I save and go do something else.

When I load the game it turns out that the stabilized guy is no longer stabilized. Instead he has 3 turns to live. This makes 2 rookies panic. They shoot their companions and kill one. Everyone panics. Everyone shoots at each other. There is one soldier left standing.

It's an awesome massacre and reloading is now ineffective due to non-random seed. :D

It's better than the original version. At least this time, the rookies actually act and play like professional and trained soldiers, rather than some Joe Schmoe who was scaped off the underside of a barrel that was sitting and fermenting in a foot of raw sewage.

Their panic is something that can be understood, considering that for them, it's an outside context problem, until they get used to it.
Also, I have to punch you, jgkitarel, because I spent a lot of time on the nanoha wiki trying to locate information on mages being trained due to being above a certain rank, only to remember and confirm that you were the one that came up with that. - Phht

So, XCOM 2 is out, might as well re-purpose the XCOM:EU spoiler thread for this!

Hit the Black site, smashed 3ish alien facilities, and I'm about to hit the location the black site gave me. I'm loving the flexibility the soldier abilities give you, and the plasma beam weapons are very nice to watch shooting.

Sectopods are the devil, as are Chryssalids.

Haven't gotten very far in the campaign yet (because I keep restarting after the first month, don't mind my twitchy reload finger), but Phantom Rangers are meeeeeean. Mine keep getting out of ludicrously hairy situations by the skin of their teeth.

Specialists are nice, but I'm still trying to figure out how best to use them. The ranged hacking thing is really cool when it works, and it adds some very nice options for infil.

Train map is hell. Again.
Like XCOM, but finding vanilla too easy or too short? Try XCOM: Long War for a whole new experience.
XCOM: War Within 101: Bounding is not a suggestion. Neither is cover. You will make mistakes, and these mistakes will cost you men; this is a war, and war is hell.

Maxim 6: If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.
Maxim 17: The longer everything goes according to plan, the bigger the impending disaster.
Maxim 47: Don't expect the enemy to cooperate in the creation of your dream engagement.
