Well, seems like we're leaving the American Revolution behind and heading for the Caribbean.

I was wondering how they were planning to continue the series.
Spoiler: show
From what I understand the role of the modern setting will be reduced and now you are playing with an Abstergo researcher. That makes me wonder if the consequences of the ending of ACIII will be explored or mentioned at all.
Now the game looks like a nice change of pace for the series, but I wonder if it would not have been better to start a new franchise altogether with the pirate elements.

Honestly, I was always kind of hoping that, even after the events of III, that the series would continue on.
Spoiler: show
In my earnest opinion, the modern frame-narrative severely weighed the series down. Desmond being one of the least interesting protagonists ever just didn't do it for me. I always sped through modern segments as fast as humanly possible so I could get back to the historical goodness.
So, for me, a reduced emphasis on the modern day would be a God-send.

I don't mind Modern Day even if I ignore it for the most part. I just dunno pirates are cool enough but..I dunno
AC I and AC II felt really unique to me, they were set in time periods that haven't really been done by big games before (Well unless you count Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis by Paradox) and they were great. I miss the uniqueness, pirates on the Spanish main can and probably will be fun, but they've been done before. I was hoping for something more unique.

Man if they did a Teutoinic Order focused game that'd be pretty cool.

I am hoping for some Naval pvp in this.

Mmmm...
Spoiler: show
I don’t care so much about Desmond, but about the issue with Juno. I’m also curious about how the conflict between Assassins and Templars will proceed, particularly given the implications that the entire mess with the end of the world could have been resolved if both factions were working together rather than at each other throats.
In any case, I agree that the series is at its best when it comes to the historical recreations.

The fact that they're slowly working their way forward to twenty minutes into the future is good. The meat of the series is not the modern era, but the history leading up to it set in the framework of the shadow war it's about. That's not to say things won't eventually shift to Desmond wholesale, but that's well into the future.

NOTE: Talked with a guy at work who actually got his daughter to play the series. She loved it and it increased her interest in history quite a bit. Ubidoft shows it's work.
Also, I have to punch you, jgkitarel, because I spent a lot of time on the nanoha wiki trying to locate information on mages being trained due to being above a certain rank, only to remember and confirm that you were the one that came up with that. - Phht

Spoiler: show
Desmond died at the end of ACIII, so I doubt we're going to go back to him.
I think the series is going to shift to the point where Abstergo finally figures out that having people relive the lives of assassins to get the info they need might not be a good idea when those people start realizing that Abstero = Templars. Which leads to a new generation of assassins that finally bring the fight back in balance.

And now for something a bit different, has anyone else read this?

I was puzzled at first by the setting they chose, beyond the fact that the naval battles in ACIII were among the most liked elements of that game, but after reading about the republic of pirates (and remembering a bit about the political climate of the era) everything started to click.

The setting now looks quite appropriate for the series indeed.

Good news man! You will be getting it after all:
Spoiler: show
Also, it’s amusing how Ubisoft keeps being terrible at preventing the early leak of this kind of announcements.

This was the most joyful entry since AC2! However the combat was still to easy and PC controls was bad as usual... I messed up a few missions because it.
