Lands of the Elemental Countries, 133AF Edition

Discussions of the various villages and political alliances.

Lands of the Elemental Countries, 133AF Edition

Unread postby Phht » August 29th, 2009, 5:04 pm

We have this section for Villages and alliances and crap, and it's not being used! So I've started this thread for the purpose of handling stuff regarding countries (and their location, etc) that have been mentioned in canon but not seen (Whirlpool, etc) or have been used briefly and not really expanded on.

Using Leafninja's world map here.

Iron Country (Tetsu no Kuni)
Spoiler: show
Location: Iron Country is located between Waterfall and Sound countries.
Status: Sasuke's attack on the Kage Summit in 83 AF caused Iron Country to lose quite a bit of prestige and consumer confidence in the security afforded to those meeting in the neutral country. As the country was working to recover its losses and regain its prestige and consumer confidence, Rain Country appeared as a rival in the neutral setting area. A business war of sorts ensued between the two countries over which was the best location for neutral ground meetings and negotiations.
Industries: Iron Country is primarily known for its neutral grounds status when hidden villages or businesses wish to prevent any "bias" created by one's surroundings. Not well known to many is that it is also home to several mercenary groups that are allowed to operate out of the country as long as it doesn't take a job that puts it against the country.
Whirlpool Country (Uzu no Kuni)
Spoiler: show
Location: Whirlpool Country is located next to Fire Country's southeastern border consisting of the peninsula pointing from Fire Country towards Water.
Status: In the mid-60s AF, Kiri/Water decided it wanted Whirlpool's land. So, it moved in and eventually crushed Whirlpool. They kept the territory, but the bloodline purges and civil war that started soon after resulted in Water Country shrinking til it was a single island by 76 AF.

In 98 AF, Whirpool officially reformed and its ninja village restarted. Elements of Kiri attempted to wipe it out again. Unfortunately, the leading candidate for Rokudaime Hokage was on vacation to the area looking for information on his mother, and helped crush the attack.
Industries: Whirpool's main industry is its Hidden Village. They also have a good export business with sea life based poisons and drugs.
Rain Country (Ame no Kuni)
Spoiler: show
Location: Rain is situated between three major powers, sharing borders with Rock, Wind, and Fire countries in addition to borders with Bird, River, and Grass countries.
Status: Rain, under Konan, went neutral in the affairs of the various villages (though it can call on Konoha and/or Suna if attacked) in 83 AF, made its shinobi force a "self-defense force," and after Akatsuki's destruction later that year, rebuilt/overhauled the village with aid of Konoha and Suna. They still participate in the Chunin Exams and take jobs out of the country, but they keep a much larger percentage of their ninja force "at home" than any other hidden village. This turtling has led to their defenses becoming quite impressive (and effective), making full use of the rainforests covering much of the country. As the years have passed, Rain has started becoming the neutral country for meetings and negotiations between powers rather than Iron Country. This has led to a semi-friendly "arms race" between the two countries as they vie for top spot as the go-to neutral power.
Industries: Rain's primary industry has shifted from its hidden village to its position as a neutral country in the same vein as Iron Country. They also have a large industry in drugs and poisons.
Water Country (Mizu no Kuni)
Spoiler: show
Location: Located east of Fire Country and south of Lightning Country. At its smallest, it consisted of a single large island. At its largest stable size, it consisted of that island plus three islands east of it and four islands west of it leading towards the mainland. It briefly occupied the peninsula bordering it and Fire Country after conquering Whirlpool, but it lost its foothold due to civil war within a few years of occupying that land.
Status: Made up of several islands, Kiri and Water Country became consumed with civil war after starting bloodline purges in 68 AF. Over the next decade, Water Country shrank until it consisted of only a single large island by the time the civil war ended. Following the destruction of Akatsuki in 83 AF, the Gondaime Mizukage worked with the Water Daimyo and peaceful started re-expanding Water's borders over the decades, with the Rokudaime Mizukage finishing the process of restoring Water to its original borders in 130 AF. While the policy on bloodlines has been changed for many decades and steps have been taken to prevent such purges from happening again, the bloodline clans that survived the purges by being on the outer islands after they broke from Water are still distrustful of Kiri and moved to Wave or Whirlpool as the islands were re-assimilated into Water Country.
Industries: Hidden Village.
Waterfall Country (Taki no Kuni)
Spoiler: show
Location: Waterfall borders Rock Country on the west, Iron Country on the east, Fire Country along most of the south, and Grass Country in the southwest corner.
Status: Waterfall has the distinction of being one of the "buffer" countries between two countries housing major hidden villages. Because of this, it is loosely allied with Konoha, though it is mostly a trade partnership since Waterfall has its own ninja village and makes enough money that it doesn't need an alliance with a major village to survive. It also has a non-agression pact with Iwa, and trades with mostly anyone and tries to keep from stepping on any toes.
Industry: Waterfall's exports and trade serves as the primary industry of the country, though the actual items being traded are from a variety of industries. Its other main industry is its ninja village, which has grown over the years.
  • Current Alliances/Treaties
  • Suna-Ame-Konoha Defense Treaty
    • Rain can call on Konoha and/or Suna for military aid if attacked. In return, Rain provides discounts for services offered to Konoha and Suna (such as for negotiations/meetings, or imports/exports) and free movement through the country.
    • Signed in 84 AF, and renewed in 99 AF and 125 AF.
  • Konoha-Taki Treaty
    • Loose defense pact to protect Waterfall from invasion from Iwa.
    • Originally formed in 62 AF when the 3GSW started, it has been amended and renewed regularly.
  • Konoha-Suna Alliance
    • Mutual Offense/Defense pact, along with various economic and movement stipulations.
    • Alliance treaty signed in the wake of the Sand-Sound invasion of Konoha in 79 AF, it was amended in 83 AF to cover threats like Akatsuki and amended again in 100 AF.
  • Treaty of Funkakou Gai
    • Signed in 25 AF by Konoha, Suna, Iwa, Kumo, and Kiri.
    • Ended 1GSW
    • Formed Bird, Rain, River, Grass, Waterfall, Wood, Forest, Sky, and Mountain Countries as buffers between the countries of the major villages.
  • Treaty of Koganeiro Toshi
    • Signed in 52 AF
    • Ended 2GSW
  • Treaty of Ryokugyoku Toshi
    • Signed in 66 AF by Suna, Iwa, and Konoha.
    • Ended 3GSW
    • Formed Kusa in Grass Country.
Thoughts/preferences/votes/whatever? Other countries and how they might've changed over the years? Other possible alliances/treaties?

EDIT: Added stuff that serbii commented on, and something I saw Tempest mention in Team Fail's thread regarding mercs and Iron Country.

Rain seems like it'd specialise in the manufacture of drugs and poisons, IMHO, it'd be heavily rainforested. Like, um, that planet in the Legends of Dune series, *wikis* Rossak.

Also Waterfall is allied with Konoha, but it's a fairly lose arrangement. Waterfall has it's own ninja force and generally doesn't do much more than trade with Konoha. They're rich enough that they don't need the alliance to survive. They're neutral with Iwa, they tend to trade with pretty much anyone and mostly don't step on people's toes so to speak.
-This is Team Fail stuff-

I like the idea of an arms race between neutral powers XD. Seems kind of counter intuitive.

I agree Whirlpool is over in Water. I'd say it got destroyed during the bloodline purges/general expansion. I don't think Water would let it go become independent again without some serious pressure from other countries a la USSR, and there's still fighting going on with that >_>.

Demon Country
Where the hell is Demon Country in relation to the rest of the Elemental Countries? Leafninja is no help, so Demon Country RP guy? Where are you thinking of sticking it? Current status and major industries too would be nice. :)

Snow/Spring Country
Where do we want to put it? I'm thinking of putting it partially bordering the north side of Earth Country. The ship ride to Snow country left from a port city of Fire Country (right?) and, with this placement, looped around Lightning Country to get to Snow Country. I guess it's Spring Country now though.

Rice Field/Sound Country
What's up with that area? Is Oto still around (or did it kinda just collapse and disappear after Orochimaru died, Sasuke ran off with other Oto people, and Kabutomaru vanished into the wild)? And what is the actual country name - Rice Field or Sound?

The Land of Demons and the surrounding countries would be roughly equivalent to where India is in our world while the Elemental Lands are roughly the same as China and Japan. Far enough away that differences in how they utilize chakra are viable but close enough that the two areas can still call on each other.

The way that I figure it, the Elemental countries specialize in battle and combat style ninjutsu while the Demon/Marsh area focuses more on using it for fighting demons and other supernatural threats.

The one shot jutsu that Shion's guard uses to permanently transform into her double is just one example of the differences between the two styles.

Elemental style ninjutsu is more apt to quick battles and unexpected combat(Ambush/Assassination) types of situations while 'Demon Area' style jutsu are much more efficent at fighting demons and at altering the battlefields of a war.
I don't believe in overkill, but I do believe in economy of force. Which is why I don't use tactical nuclear devices to get rid of gnats that are annoying me. Well, not often anyway.

Naruto shrugged. "It doesn't have to make sense, we're ninja. We walk on water because it's easier than learning to swim." Vulpine by Saphroneth

Stories do not exist to warn you of monsters. You knew that monsters existed before you could speak, before you could walk. Stories exist to tell you monsters can be defeated.

Wood Country
It got a one-off mention in the manga regarding the group that attacked Danzo. Plus, there's that "Forest Country" from filler anime. So I had the brilliant idea of taking that country to the immediate northeast of Fire Country (that country with two asterisks in it), and calling it Wood Country. See, it used to be two separate countries, formed out of Fire Country land due to the treaty ending the First Great Shinobi War. One was Wood Country, and the other was Forest Country. In the years between the Kyuubi attack and series start, the two countries merged under the Wood Country name. I claim each asterisk actually denotes the capitals of the countries. Not sure which is still the capital now though. :D

Moon Country
I'm thinking of placing this tourist and gambling country just southeast of Sea Country. The two "unclaimed" islands in the bottom left corner of the Elemental Countries map is part of Moon Country. Hm, I could also make the two "unclaimed" islands above those also part of Moon Country, with the actual crescent moon shaped island that's the main part of the country just off the map to the right and also slightly to the bottom

--

Bird, Rain, River, Grass, and Waterfall Countries were nearly all the other countries formed out of that treaty. Left unnamed so far is one more country between Lightning and Fire, and one between Wind and Earth next to Bird Country. The ocean is considered a good enough "buffer," so Wave, Whirlpool, and Tea weren't formed at the same time. Iron Country actually formed during the 1GSW and gained its neutral status by mediating the end of that war years later. Rice Field Country seceded from Iron Country between 2GSW and 3GSW. Snow Country formed in 39 AF (and the coup that sent what's-her-face out of country to become an actress occurred in 71 AF).

Maybe Valley Country is the one next to Bird Country (and Mountain Country would be the one northwest of that, also sharing a border with Earth Country)? And Sky Country for the one over by Lightning Country?

I think of the treaty ending the First Great Shinobi War as sorta like the treaty ending WWI, where a bunch of new countries were formed out of various nations' territory.

--

And just think, once we get those last 2-3 countries named, the Elemental Countries will have been "mapped" except for a few islands here and there. :o

Oh, I added a nations-villages time line to the timeline spreadsheet. Mainly tracks major multi-national political events, country and village formation/destruction, and the like. I think Tea and Sea Countries and the five great countries are the only ones without a formation year at the moment. Well, them and Demon plus Marsh.

Additional stuff that will turn up in Team Fail's thread soon:

Market Town (Fire Country): Located at the nexus of several major roads in fire country, including the road from Konoha in the south, the road from Waterfall in the north and the road from Grass in the west. A medium to large town and centre of trade due to it's location. However it's reliance on ground water and a small river rather than a large river or lake has kept it from becoming a major city in fire country. There's a permanent small contingent of STC Shinobi stationed here to deal with the inevitable thieves and brigands attracted to a city with strong trade, however most civil matters are dealt with by the local police force. As expected trade is the major commodity, however farming is good enough in the general vicinity that if trade was cut off the permanent residents would be very hungry, but probably wouldn't starve. There's a very high visitor turnover and a large percentage of the population in the city at any time are visiting traders and travellers passing through, Accommodation is also a big business here. The market here is one of the largest in fire country, there's also a large hiring fair here twice every year for farmers and landowners to hire workers during planting and harvest.

I know it's an unoriginal name but everything in Naruto is, heck everything in real life is. The town only sprang up because it's where several major roads meet. Otherwise it isn't an ideal place to put a town, if they had a better water source and could allow trade along the river it would have become one of the major cities in fire. It's not particularly easy to defend either and it probably fell to Iwa during the third war.

I learnt something interesting yesterday. Takibi 焚火 is the word for bonfire. The second character is fire, I looked it up but the taki isn't the same as the one for waterfall >_> (滝). I thought it would be neat, but alas, kanji screws it up again. I've got the insane urge to somehow work it into the RP now. Yes I know I'm strange.

Grass is west of Fire Country. How's the road from there in the east? >.>

Other than that, awesome. :D

Some notes:
  • Atlas Entries
    Spoiler: show
The following countries have locations within the Elemental Countries and have entries in the Atlas:
    • Bird Country (no hidden village)
    • Earth (Iwa)
    • Fire Country (Konoha)
    • Grass Country (Kusa)
    • Iron Country (no hidden village)
    • Lightning Country (Kumo)
    • Moon Country (???)
    • Mountain Country (formerly Kagerou, now Yu) - Yu would be the hidden village Hidan came from
    • Rain Country (Ame)
    • Rice Field Country (Oto?)
    • River Country (no hidden village)
    • Sea Country (no hidden village)
    • Sky Country (formerly Sora, now no hidden village)
    • Snow Country (Yuki?)
    • Tea Country (no hidden village)
    • Valley Country (formerly Tani, now no hidden village)
    • Water Country (Kiri)
    • Waterfall Country (Taki)
    • Wave Country (no hidden village)
    • Whirlpool Country (Uzu)
    • Wind Country (Suna)
    • Wood Country (no hidden village)
      • Forest Country merged with Wood Country and does not have a separate entry
And outside the Elemental Countries with entries:
    • Demon Country
    • Marsh Country
Most of them need more fleshing out, but they're at least in there. Feel free to help out there.
  • The following countries currently do not exist in the Elemental Countries. It's possible that some/all exist between the Demon Lands and the Elemental Countries or in the Demon Lands, but the "Elemental Countries" is pretty much fully mapped now. Feel free to point out a good location to place a country that'll fit it in that isn't already in use though.
    Spoiler: show
    • Stone Country
    • Fang Country
    • Claw Country
    • Vegetable Country
    • Noodles Country
    • Honey Country
    • Neck Country
    • Red Bean Jam Country
    • Swamp Country
    • Bear Country
  • Hidden village notes
    Spoiler: show
Whether or not Rice Field and Snow have a hidden village is uncertain. Movie 1 points to their being a Snow hidden village at some point, whether it still exists, I dunno. Oto's existence is uncertain as well, even in the manga - Sasuke's rogue, Orochi's dead, and Kabuto wandered off, so I'm not sure the "village" stayed together or fell apart at some point.

The manga Chunin Exams had some genin with moon symbols on their headbands, which points to the existence of a hidden village in Moon Country. The filler arc dealing with Moon Country seemed to point to their not being one, so I'm unsure whether to place a Hidden Moon there or not. Given its major industry of tourism, I'm leaning towards not putting one there.

Kagerou (Heat Haze) and Tani (Valley) hidden villages were filler arc villages destroyed 30ish years before series start, so they're backstory stuff. Yu (Hot Springs) is only referenced in the fact that Hidan hailed from this village and killed several people there on his way out after becoming a Jashinist. I figured Heat Haze -> Hot Springs was a valid leap in naming when starting a hidden village at a new site.

Sora was the hidden village destroyed in 2GSW and its ninja appeared in Shippuden Movie 2.
  • Morphy's beta-ing using forms to enter timeline data without needing to physically modify the speadsheet.
    • Years are only entered as BF/AF due to form limitations that preclude me setting the spots to auto-calculate calendar conversions for people to enter the calendar system of their choice. I do have the cells set up to auto-calculate the conversions in the spreadsheet, so it'll auto-fill the years on data insertion.
    • Morphy's only entered one thing so far, but other than tweaks on the form (most of which I was able to do), didn't have any issues with it, so I'll look at starting to do more personal time line sheets for other players.

Hey you! Yeah you, in front of the screen! How many times have you said to yourself "Boy, this Leaf Ninja Map sure is awesome, but I wish I could add my own locations to it!"

What, never? Well screw you anyways!

Because right here, for an unlimited time offer is the [urlhttp://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2306/mapfonts.png]Leaf Ninja Custom Font set![/url]

With these three* fonts, you too can add new locations to the Leaf Ninja map! All you have to do is open or paste the map in Microsoft Paint (or whatever art program you use), spell the location name in a separate location (you CAN spell, can't you?) and then paste the result with an asterisk or line (as seen on the map) to the correct location! So simple, even an Naba* could do it!

* If you want the biggest font, do it yourself; 'cause MEK is too lazy.

* Kidding. No hard feelings, I hope? D:
