The sun rises on a new day. You feel its light flow into your room, and you shift about in your covers, surrounding yourself in a cocoon of blankets more secure than even a Metapod's shell. Just a few more minutes...

"Harryy...."

You groan.

"Hey, Harrrrrryyyyyy..." Your mom settles into your bed. "Twerrrrp..."

"Mmmmrrrgghhh..."

"Rise and shiiiiinnnneee. Good morning, to youuuuuu...!"

You do your best to curl into an even tighter cocoon. Unfortunately, you've already curled up as much as you can.

"I made your faaaaavvvvoooorrriiiteeeee... paaaaaannnnnncakes... Breakfast of champions..."

You groan. Mom won't admit it, but she is the. worst. cook.

"... Okay, so Machi made them. But seriously, they're gonna get cold if you don't get up."

Machi, on the other hand, is an amazing chef. You do your best to resist the siren call of ultimate pancakes.

Mom sighs. "Alright, punk. Looks like we're doing this the hard way." You feel her grip your blankets. Oh no. "WAKEEY WAKEEYYYY!!" She rips your cocoon away from you, exposing you to the light of the sun. She tosses it aside and dives in for the kill, tickling you into submission.

"EEEKKK HELP MACHI MOM'S ATTACKING ME! EEEAAAGGGHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!" You squirm out of her grip, and manage to escape... off the bed and onto the floor. Ow.

"Good grief, Harry. Here I thought you'd be easier to wake today."

"Mmmmggh..."

"... You've forgotten what day it is, haven't you?"

"... Monday?"

You can feel her grin. "Today's the day."

Your eyes widen. Today... You look at the calendar from where you're lying... and then you leap, letting out a whoop of joy. "Woohooo! Why didn't you START with that!? See you DOWNSTAIRS!"

You dash down the stairs, through the halls, to the kitchen, and dive into your seat, just as Machi sets your plate down, and start stuffing your face.

"Hey, hey, slow down, kiddo," Mom says as she finally gets into the kitchen. After all, if you're actually leaving today, this is gonna be the last time for a while that you're gonna get the chance to eat those!"

You blink, a whole pancake hanging out of your maw.

"Heh. Okay, so..." She produces a folder. "Let's see... Gotta make sure the paperwork is right... those folks at the League are the WORST sometimes. Hmmm... Name is correct... Hey, Harry, are you a boy, or a girl?"

You raise an eyebrow, and she smirks.

"Girl it is, then."

You give her the meanest look you can while still eating. It's... surprisingly hard. She chuckles.

"Alright, alright. Yeah, they got your gender right this time, don't worry. Okay... Blood type... Hair color... eye color... age..." She goes over the paperwork as she picks at her pancakes.

You finish your breakfast with a nice cup of Moomoo Milk, and Mom finishes soon after. "Alright. Now... Come with me, Harry." You follow her into her research office, and see a machine with three Pokeballs inside. "Here we are. Man... time really has flown... speaking of, what I've got here are three Pokemon, perfectly ready for a journey."

You look at the balls, and press a button set below the part of the machine one of the balls is embedded within. A hologram pops up, and your mom smirks.

"Starly, the Starling Pokemon. It's pretty wimpy and easily passed over on its own, but has a tendency to work well within small groups. Just be careful, their proud nature tends to cause them to bicker and be aggressive." You press another button, and the hologram shifts. "Doduo, the Twin Bird Pokemon. It's one of the faster land Pokemon, and very cautious. Its heads never sleep at the same time, so you pretty much always have someone watching over you. That said, they aren't the best at flying and they're... well, somewhat prone to flee before fighting." You shift the hologram again. "And this is Fletchling, the Tiny Robin Pokemon. Very good singers and friendly to those they're familiar with, but they're also really territorial and temperamental to strangers. You'll have to teach it restraint, which is pretty tough due to how stubborn it is."

"Wow..."

"We hatched these three in the Bird Cage, a while back, and they're ready to leave the nest, so I picked a few out for you. So, which one do you want?"

[]Starly (Pros: Works well in a small team, sneaky on its own. Cons: Weak, but prideful to a fault.)
[]Doduo (Pros: Vigilant, FAST. Cons: A bit cowardly, not very good at flying.)
[]Fletchling (Pros: Friendly once familiar, decent singers. Cons: Temperamental and merciless, hard to train.)

You take the last ball, and let out your- your- Pokemon.

"Flechling!" The bird chirps as it materializes on the table.

"Hey there," you say, reaching out with a hand to Fletchling.

Would you like to give Fletchling a nickname?
[] Yes
-[] Write in Nickname
[] No

It gives you a rather stern growl in reply, pecking you when you come too close. "Ow."

"I warned you, Harry. Fletchling tend to be a bit temperamental. You're going to have to teach it to respect you as its trainer, as well as restraint."

You puff your cheeks in a pout. "I knew that... Okay, our training begins NOW!" You say, pointing your finger to the sky.

The bird huffs, turning its head away from you.

"Not so fast," your mom says, smirking. "There's one more thing to give you... Ta daaaa!" She hands you a small red device with a screen and camera device. You tap a button, and it activates.

"My own Pokedex..."

"It's an encyclopedia on Pokemon habits, linked to the Global Pokemon Database. It's also your ID as a trainer, and your wallet. Don't lose it."

"Right. Okay... NOW our training begins!"

You retrieve Fletchling (though not without more than a couple more pecks), and begin on your journey.

[X] Yes

Because we're going to have an amazing firebird of amazingness, he needs an amazing name. For this reason, I suggest we go with the greatest play on words name our ten year old name can come up with: Bernie (Burn-E)!

[X] Train Fletchling
-[X] Teach new Moves
-[X] Overcome Flaws
[X] Attempt capture of Wild Pokemon (Seeks out a Pokemon from the area you're in.)

Spend most of our time working with Bernie, training out both bad habits and teaching him some awesome new moves. Once we're confident in our teamwork, then go after a wild Pokemon.

We just got him. We should bond with our new partner. He's going to be with us for a long, long time. Let's start our relationship off on a good foot. Moves and such will come in time. Bonding and overcoming flaws is a good foundation for the future. And we can't have him being the only one training! So we should work on our own abilities as well!

As for a name, because of course we aren't going to leave him unnamed..Sirocco. The blazing desert wind. Rocco for short.

I'm agreeing with everyone else on working with our new friend to improve our teamwork, and I think we should also look into getting something that can help cover his weaknesses before he develops them. A month without catching a single new pokemon is kind of a poor showing for a newbie trainer. And we're going to want to try and impress Mom.

---------------
August 28, almost a Month after gaining your first Pokemon.

Your Pokemon - your Pokemon - perches on the foot of your bed as you lay there, practicing your power. You've been working on it, on and off, but it still goes off every now and again without your input, or ignores you. Right now, the best you can do is give it a nudge to do something, and it MIGHT actually cause something to happen.

(Harry gained the Spell, Accidental Magic. Or... he may have had it for as long as he can remember. Magic Training Failure.)

You sigh. You know what you can do, kinda... but you don't really understand how you do it. It's... really annoying. You've spent some time working on it

You sit up and reach out to the Fletchling, who you've decided to name Sirocco, after hot desert winds. You THINK there's a desert in its home region, but... you're not sure for sure. The bird's been... somewhat aggressive since you got him.

"Fle." He pecks at your fingers, nipping at them. You wince a little at the touch, but maintain eye contact with him. Neither of your back down. It's sort of become this game you play. You know he doesn't respect you, which is very bad news as far as being a trainer-Pokemon team goes, but you're... starting to understand him a little better. So you're... establishing some form of authority. It helps that you're the one who feeds him. Speaking of which...

"You've really gotta stop doing that, Sirocco."

"Fle, Linnnn." His arrogant chirps seem mixed with a bit of worry.

"You know I don't like it."

"Fleee..." It loosens its vicegrip on your finger, and looks away a bit. You smile before reaching forward a bit more and petting him on the head. He leans into it a little, obviously enjoying it, until he realizes who it is that's petting him. He squawks indignantly and flaps away onto your desk. You're... pretty sure the skin under his feathers is flushing redder. "I-ing! Fle ing Flet chling... let... fle... tch!" (J-jerk! It's not like I LIKE your stupid... stroking... finger... thing!)

"See, you're learning. I'll go get us some snacks."

Training Success! Sirocco's Pugnacious has been Tempered!. Keep going and you might just break that habit!

It took some serious time, but you're starting to get through to him... you think. He certainly seems to be resisting you every step of the way, though.

Bonding Success! Sirocco's Bond level has gone up to 1.

September 23rd

Mom was a little worried when you told her you were going to explore the Chrono Island area, but after your assurance that you wouldn't go anywhere near Lost Cave, you got her permission and started combing the meadows just east of the port town. So far, you haven't found what you're looking for... but something's come up.
Overcome Flaws Roll (1d100, at least 70): 19+(8 Taming*2(Flying Affinity))-5 (Not Enough Badges)+10 (Bonding Level)-5 (Repetitiveness)=35 Total Failure
"Give it."

Sirocco stares down at you from atop a tree branch. "Fle le." (Make me.)

You narrow your eyes. "... Givvveee it."

"Fle!" (Make me!)

Training Roll Total Failure! The next time one of Sirocco's Tempered Flaws is triggered, it'll be treated as a normal Flaw!

"Sirocco..." Sirocco gives you the smuggest smug mug that could ever be mugged, just before devouring the berry you had found. He'd gone and snatched it from the ground before you even had the chance to take a closer look at it. "... Fine," you grumble. "I'm just gonna laugh when it turns out that Berry was poisonous, and you shouldn't have eaten it."

"Tch fle!" (We'll see!)
Bonding Roll (1d100, at least 70): 44+(8 Taming*2(Flying Affinity))+(8 Empathy*2(Flying Affinity))-5 (Repetitiveness)= 71 (Close Success)
You sigh. Maybe it's just the weather getting a little colder, but Sirocco is getting more and more uppity as the month progresses. Still, he at least seems kinda chatty compared to how he was before... Maybe he's getting more comfortable with you?

Bonding Roll Success! Sirocco's Bond Level has increased by 0.5.

Maybe you shouldn't have come out here to try and make your first capture... but maybe a second Pokemon will help simmer your starter down-
Pokemon Catch (Based on Appearance Percentages, roll lower for rarer Pokemon!): 17-8 Catching=9
Suddenly, the grass rustles, and you expertly turn your gaze, peering at the creature that appeared. "Come on out!"

A single tan tail pokes out, with brown at its curled tip. You can see the glint of a coin in the grass, moving and swaying. "Meow..." (Whoops...)

Sirocco suddenly screeches and swoops down from the tree he was perched on.

Sirocco vs Wild Meowth! Rounds 1-3
Spoiler: show
Sirocco Battle Rolls, Round 1: 5 (Tackle: 5)
Meowth Battle Rolls, Round 1: 4/2 (Defense: 2)

Sirocco Battle Rolls, Round 2: 2 (Tackle: 2)
Meowth Battle Rolls, Round 2: 4 (Defense: 4)

Sirocco Battle Rolls, Round 3: 1 (Tackle: 1)
Meowth Battle Rolls, Round 3: 3/2 (Defense: 1)
Sirocco slams into the Meowth, sending it sliding out of the grass. "Eooowwwtthhh!! M...me eo ewwth!?" (Eeeeooowwww! H-hey, can't we talk this out!?)

"Ling? Flet tch le!" (What's that? Sorry, didn't hear you.)

"Me-" (I said-)

Sirocco slams into the Meowth, and this time the Meowth slides back only a couple inches, digging itself in. Sirocco tries to push it over, but is proving not so great at it.

The Meowth snarls as it pushes Sirocco back, forcing the bird to right itself before landing on the ground. "Eo ewwth!" (Can't we talk this out!?)

The firebird gives the cat an inquisitive look, before charging again, this time sending the cat head over heels. "Fleee-ch iiinnnn liiinnnnggg?" (What's there to talk about? This is a battle!)

Then the Meowth... starts to cry. "E-eo eoow meow! M-m-m-meoooooooowwwwooowwoooooooowwwtthhhh!?!?!" (I-I was just curiooouuussss!! W-w-why do you have to be so meannnnnnnn!?!?!"

It then turns tail and starts running. Sirocco gives chase.

"Fleth!?" (H-hey, wait!)

oog: Invisitext:
Spoiler: show
Mom was a little worried when you told her you were going to explore the Chrono Island area, but after your assurance that you wouldn't go anywhere near Lost Cave, you got her permission and started combing the meadows just east of the port town.

"Fle!" (Make me!)

"Tch fle!" (We'll see!)
Bonding Roll (1d100, at least 70): 44+(8 Taming*2(Flying Affinity))+(8 Empathy*2(Flying Affinity))-5 (Repetitiveness)= 71 (Close Success)

A single tan tail pokes out, with brown at its curled tip. You can see the glint of a coin in the grass, moving and swaying. "Meow..." (Whoops...)

"Fleth!?" (H-hey, wait!)
ig: With the above.

oog: James, why didn't you give us any warning that repetitiveness would cause penalties?

One would have thought that repeating an action like that would have given us a bonus.
