Rush Quest (You are no longer a hobo)

You hate this song. From its stupid ‘I am so great’ lyrics to its ‘I can’t actually sing so maybe I’ll autotune my talking’ vocals. Mash, mash, mash, you take out your annoyance on the potatoes.

“Can someone change the station!?” you yell to the house in general, there are speakers in the kitchen, but the actual tuner is with the sound system in the TV room. Mash, mash, mash. The station changes.

-thorities are issuing warning after three nights of medium to large scale attacks. The Mouros believed responsible still at large and wandering the greater Balmain area. FMRS have issued their standard statement about staying indoors and reporting any sightings promptly, however they have come under fire from critics for failing to-

“Change it again!” One can not properly cook to depressing news! The station changes again, to acceptable music this time. Mash, mash, how are the other vegetables going? You pass the window in time to see a flock of parrots taking to the sky screeching and squawking, next door’s dog starts barking madly at the birds as if she’d never seen one before. Other dogs join in and you hear a rumble, the storm must be coming in.

You glance out the window again, catching a slight movement from the corner of your eye and feel a thrill of anxiety. Nah, probably just more birds or something. A slight crunch, like concrete on concrete and you clutch the potato masher a little tighter... pathetic, if you’re going to freak out at least get a knife or something, I mean, not like it would help but a potato masher? Died with a potato masher in their hand would make for a terrible obituary...

The window explodes in a shower of glass and you get a glimpse of something large barreling through the wall. Inbetween the ‘ohcrapohcrapohcrapgoingtodie’ thoughts your brain manages to slip in ‘You had to go and tempt fate, didn’t you?’

The creature, a glimpse of a mish mash of dirt, concrete, plants and other bits and pieces. One of them. The anxiety is gone now, fear and adrenaline replace it. Useless, see it move but it barely registers before you’re on your back looking up at the stormy sky, concrete and shattered glass below you, your chest burning and heaving from the blow. You hear, more than see, it move deeper into the house. Hear screams. Darkness starts to creep into the edge of your vision, no! Have to get up, get help or... chest... why does breathing hurt so much? There’s a catch, a rattle in your breathing that is suddenly scarier than anything else going on. Panic shoots through you, the darkness encroaches.

You feel something, somethings, in the darkness. A presence, feeling, sensation, is this what dying feels like? They press towards you, seeking something, you. There is a burning in your brain now, along with your chest. They twist deeper, all seeking. The pain intensifies. Have to choose, maybe if one wins the rest will go, have to make it stop, hurts too much, you’re sure it’s killing you.

It takes you a moment, several long agonising ones in fact, but this seems important somehow, and you separate out the sensations; Twisting, Strain, Dark, Warm, Cold, Restlessness.

Choose
-Sensation

Quest will be renamed as the story progresses (unless you remain a hobo out of respect for your mangled house).
A joint project.

You pick the feeling of restlessness out of the jumble, focusing on it and trying to block out the others. It becomes stronger and the other feelings fade. Much better, the pressure, the burning in your mind lessens, replaced by a cool, seeping sensation. Your chest still hurts, but you think you can stand now....in fact, you’re sure you have to. Not sure why, just definitely have to stand. You stagger painfully to your feet. Definitely have to run. So you run. Where? In. Yes, towards the noise is good. And there was a something important, not sure what. Run more. Fast...faster...everything is a blur. You slam into, through, a wall. Silly. There is a door right? Somewhere. Have to run, move, move, move. Focus is hard, impossible, except for the things you just know you have to do. Twitch, twitch, fidget. The noise! Right! Run again.

It’s here. Surrounded by crumpled and broken possessions, splintered walls. This is important, you think this is important maybe. That this should matter. There are people. Dead. Crumpled and broken like the room. This was important to you think. Can’t remember why. There was something. Fidget, fidget. The monster steps through the TV as it turns to you. Monster? No. Mouros. Yes. Yes, yes, yes, that is the name, because the first girl was Spanish. Yes. Araceli was cursed. Fidget. You need to kill it, as sure as day follows night. Thunder rumbles, so does the creature. It needs to kill you.

It swings at you, like before. You’re fast now. Move, move, move. It misses by a mile but hits more supports. They don’t fall near you but a tile slides in from the crumbling roof and strikes your shoulder. Pain! The pain is a shock. The Mouros charges like a hulking bear as you stand startled. Move! Not enough time to dodge, you slam straight into its forelimb and tear through it. Concrete and glass and branches breaking and twisting. Doesn’t hurt. Shoulder hurts still, chest hurts still, but nothing new. Shift, fidget, are you breathing too fast? Its roar is inorganic, the shifting and grinding of stone and steel. Damaged more than hurting. Move, move, move, have to kill it. Tear it apart. You slam into it again. Again, again, again. Is there a better way? Doesn’t matter. Kill. Kill, kill, kill. Fleshless. Shadows and garbage, but it can die.

It doesn’t so much stop as it is torn to pieces. Yes. Yes, yes, yes. Now. Need to find more to kill. Anything, another would be best but anything will do. To the street. There was something important... not now. Sure you’ll remember. The power is out but it’s still twilight, you can see a little. A terrified face peeks out a window. Yes, that will do, there first. Fast, just like before, you hit the wall and go straight through, tearing cables and plasterboard. Screams. Movement out of the corner of your eye. Something important, you turn, a colourful parrot flutters in the air. The people huddle, stagger, run. Away from you. You watch the parrot. There are a thousand others like it, but somehow this one is special. You know it. Like you’ve known everything before.

“Hiya” says the bird.

Yes. You’re sure.
You really.
REALLY.
Want to kill that bird.

We need to focus. To center ourselves. Gain control.

When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move."

I agree. The logical path to getting rid of this urge to kill the bird is to go ahead and kill it. Once it's dead, we won't want to kill it anymore and we can calm down. Grab a coffee. Play some DDR. You know, soothing, calming things.

No, don't kill it yet. We first need to humiliate it.Show him who is the boss. Let's challenge it to a race!

That's not the most logical path Witt, it's simply the easiest. And usually when something is worth doing, it's not easy.

I agree, we should totally be logical about this. The bird is there. We want to kill it, like an itch you just can't reach. Desires exist to be sated.

You stare at it for a moment, it’s a very short moment, it lasts for about as long as the thought ‘why should I kill the bird?’ with maybe a hint of ‘I should catch it’, before you promptly come to your senses; you must kill the bird. You make a lunge for it, fast, faster, but it expects it, and the little rat is flying. You overshoot and hit the wall again, going through and back on to the street. The bird is there, fluttering. Taunting you with its existence. Lunge again. Almost to the bird. It shoots off and you run after it. Yes, kill it. Yes, yes, no! You’ve stopped. Slowed. What? Why? No matter. It’s getting away and you lunge for it again. Just as your fingertips brush its tail feathers it pulls ahead again. Frustrating.

“Flicker, I need a word,” a voice says. The bird misses a beat and you close your hand on tail feathers. Ha! There’s a strange sensation in your mind, like when you turn on an old TV and the picture shifts and flickers for a moment. Your hand opens and the sensation vanishes. The bird shoots straight up.

“Damn it!” Says the bird.

“Rev will take it from here.” Replies the voice.

You turn to the source. Two forms, a big one with a hood and a littler one with a face like a rabbit. Your eyes narrow on the big one as it steps forward. That one. It needs to die first, rabbit-face and the parrot will come after. Yes. Perfect. The perfect plan. You’re so smart. You run towards the big one. Yes! Delightful, you careen into it, hitting it hard and forcing it backwards. Then it’s gone. Not killed. Wrong. No. Pain! Pain in the back of your head, spin to see the big one only now it is gone. Frustrating! Maybe it is behind you again, spin and lunge. Feel something again, contact, but only for a second and then- ouch! Sprawled on your stomach on the concrete. You can see it though, in front of you, rubbing tentatively at its side, like it’s bruised instead of in it’s death throes. Annoying. Get up, you have to get up, you have to kill it before it disappears again and- and- what?

What’s going on?

“-you know I can’t talk to the ghost,” the rabbit faced one was facing the parrot.

“Well yes, your brain is an inhospitable rats’ nest,” the parrot replies, fixing its tail feathers.

“Then you see why I need your help. Or at least your information, unless you want to have to deal with this all yourself,” Rabbit-face turns towards you. “Have you snapped out of it yet?”

>...maybe, sort of?
>Nope! :D
