Eldritch High Quest

Unread postby Chernobov » March 7th, 2014, 5:29 pm

Author's Note:
Spoiler: show
You're a wizard, [Poster]. Or, depending on how this goes, a magical Bruce Lee.

Inspiration for this quest: Eldritch High, by John Wick.
The letter had arrived three weeks ago.

“You are cordially invited to attend the Alexander Circe Academy for the Study of Esoteric and Eldritch Arts. This academy was created for gifted individuals with Sight, in order to acclimate them to their newfound senses, and prepare them for the world of odd and often dangerous things that exists in parallel to our own. I understand that this is a heavy responsibility for a fourteen-year-old, but there is no alternative.

Please take all the necessary items you would require for an extended stay. The Academy is a boarding school, so your room and board is covered, but personal amenities or luxuries, such as favored toys, articles of clothing, etc. are not provided for you. So please, remember to pack your toothbrush.

It is recommended that you arrive prior to January 15th, in order to be on time for orientation, and the beginning of the Spring 2014 semester, so that there is adequate time to assign you to your Hall, and work out your schedule.

If you are prepared for your journey, have made the necessary goodbyes and packed the provisions required for your four-year stay at the Academy, please inform one of the staff at your location, and you will be escorted to the Academy.

Good luck, and welcome.

- Headmaster Dominic Vex”

You knew, of course, that the letter was less of an invitation and more of a summons. After the incident you had gone through that gave you “Sight”, your life's changed more than you could imagine before. You now see the world through some shining, off-color lens, the people on the street looking like ghosts, and... weird things, for lack of a better word. Angels and demons, and everything in-between. And according to the nice people in suits, who watch you nearly every day now, they've been there all the time. You just didn't see them yet.

You and your family were moved away for your safety. You see guards walking past your house, escorting you from a distance any time you leave. You've been pulled out of your old school, and up until that letter came, none of the people who were protecting you had told you anything. And, looking down at the latter now, it seems like there really isn't any alternative.

Right now, it's January 12th. But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. First things first:

Who are you?

Things we need to know:

Where are you from?
Literally, any country you feel like.

When did you gain Sight?
The incident that gave you Sight could have been anything involving the magical world. You could have been attacked by some creature from the Shadowrealm, you could have touched a magical artifact, or you could have stumbled upon a doorway to some mystical parallel world. Whatever the case is, you're no longer a regular human being.

What do you look like?
A brief description, highlighting any distinct traits about your appearance. A few could be related to the aforementioned incident, or your Gift, seen below.

What is your Stereotype?
Stereotypes are the kind of things you'd find in a teen movie. The jock, the nerd, the popular kid, the weird kid, the schoolaholic, etc. Pick the most accurate stereotype, it'll be important later.

How are you Gifted?
Gifts are a distinct trait that gives you an edge in certain situations. They start out giving you a small but distinct edge, and can be improved later. If you want, we can make a custom Gift. A list of gifts:

Beast Tongue - You can speak with any and all animals, mundane or magical.
Dwarven Blood - You have a strong Willpower, the key to magic.
Elven Blood - You naturally excel at anything that requires speed.
Familiar - You have a magical pet only you can communicate with. Your familiar cannot be killed.
Family Heirloom - You came to the school with a family heirloom that holds a bit of magic. It has a single, specific magical effect, and an unlimited amount of uses.
Giant Blood - Your lineage gives you an edge in tests of strength.
Lucky - You're naturally less prone to failure. You're less likely to fumble any magic, and in an equal match, you win.
Warlock Taint - You've been reached out to by the less savory side of magic. You gain access to Dark Magic.
Spoiler: show
(P.S.: I apologize if I'm unloading a bit too much at once. Or if I'm not unloading enough, since picking classes/dorms/etc. is a thing that'll happen.)

oog: Not familiar with the source material, but what the heck? Why not?

ig: From: Somewhere in the United States of America (let me know if I need to be more specific). Description: Shorter than average, blond, black eyes, male. Gained Sight: A run in with a Warlock, the memory of which is too foggy to be sure what happened beyond the fact that whatever it was left a Warlock Taint. Stereotype: I have no idea since I'm not very familiar with them (I think that the schoolaholic is like Hermione Granger. That right?), so I'll let someone else fill this one in. Gifted: The aforementioned Warlock Taint.

((In terms of the source material, I'm just going to go ahead and say: we'll be doing some worldbuilding. The only static thing about the setting is that the Academy is a big fancy high school, with five "Houses", that happens to be in another dimension. As for stereotypes, if we're going by Harry Potter characters: Hermione, somewhere between a nerd and a schoolaholic. Fred and George are a flavor of weird kid. Malfoy is an archetypal popular kid/bully, at least at first. Harry and Ron are both slackers, but in a different way. Early books Neville would be a "weird kid". In terms of jocks: most of the quidditch team throughout the books, the seekers and such doubling as popular kids. The Marauders, in their time, were most likely a gang of weird kids.)

I see... Is it possible to combine stereotypes? I'm thinking nerd/schoolaholic (whichever fits better) in the sense of being eager to learn, and weird kid in the sense of having a (possibly dangerous) fascination with the Dark Arts (or whatever they're called in this Quest).

As long as it's relatively specific. Something like "occult nerd", or the like.
