By Jeffery Vasquez

Realms A Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, AMG, Forgotten Realms cross.
Progeny R1/2, SM.
Splitting Heirs R1/2, Tenchi.

I'll add others in the future. Oh, and Team 8, and NoFP should be taken as read, otherwise I would never have joined this board, let alone posted.

I can only second these recommendations; Jeffrey Vasquez is a highly skilled writer, a true testament to the fact that there will always be someone better. 'Realms' is by far my favorite story, it's sheer level of epicness dwarfing anything else I've seen. Let's just hope there'll be another update one of these years...

Last I heard, shortly after his most recent post of Realms, was that Vasquez had been having some sort of family crisis (A relative's death, IIRC) and wasn't going to be writing anything for a while.

If you want an excellent completed fic, I'd suggest the Ranma 1/2 story titled Relentless (www.talesfromthevault.com/relentless/). It is one of the best Ranma fics ever.

One of my favorite authors, who doesn't write much, is Carrotglace. Most of his stuff based on Ranma 1/2, but all of it is gold and really long.

Mazoku Factor
Ranma watches Slayers when he was a kid, and took on the personality of a certain priest...
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/695634/1/Ra ... oku_Factor

Insertion
A very different take on the insertion concept in the Ranma 1/2 setting. It's simply amazing.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/216310/1/Insertion

Gaijin
An insertion in Sailor Moon, but he's a bum and the senshi keep trying to kill him, the negaverse too, can't forget the Yakuza, oh then there's the ninja...
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/404359/1/Gaijin

A Matter of Force
A very AU Harry Potter fic, that is alot like Carrot's epic Insertion

I have not read too much fanfiction so far and almost nothing on HP or Naruto beside Matt's stories. However I've been hanging around another forum board (StarDestroyer.Net, centered on Star Wars vs Star Trek discussion, where I've picked some really great stories. I'll list here some that I liked most.

Be warned though that most of them are "published" in the forum board, so usually you'll have to skip through the comments before reaching the next chapter. There are also some unfinished ones, that have not been updated in a long time, but what has been done so far it's really great.

Star Trek vs Star Wars
  • Conquest by Mike Wong (the owner of SD.Net) - A completed fiction about the invasion of the Milky Way by the Empire. Also available in PDF form
  • Star Crossed by Stravo - a story of epic proportions (over 95 chapters) - this is the first fanfiction I read and the author is truly gifted. Unfortunately it has been on hiatus since last summer, with no notice when it will be updated again, if ever. Unfinished
Warhammer 40K
  • In Memoria by ImperialOverlord - This is the story of Inquisitor Jolan Gix and his retinue. One of the best 40K fanfiction I've read. It's also worth following the RPG thread on the Andraxian incident, where this character appeared first.
  • In the Image of His Father by ImperialOverlord - the early story of Inquisitor Maladar, friend and colleague of Jolan Gix, since early childhood till becoming a full-fledged member of the Inquisition.
  • Under this Sign by ImperialOverlord - featuring Maladar being stranded on a techno-barbarian-medieval planet. Unfinished
  • Heretic's Redemption by Elheru Aran - the short story of a company of Luna Wolves Space Marines, trapped in warp since the Horus Heresy. There is also a short prequel - Mattathias' Tale - how Battle Brother Mattathias came to become one of the first Dreadnoughts.
  • The Primarch Chronicles by Kuja - three short stories on the fall of thee of the traitor primarchs.
Warcraft Universe

A bunch of short stories written by Kuja, based on various bits of Warcraft lore
  • Forsaken - how a convicted criminal raises up as one of the Forsaken
  • Nightmare - The Emerald dream and the four dragons who were sent to stop it, only to become corrupted
  • How it's done - a humorous story on how do council meetings happen for the Horde, the Alliance and the Steamwheedle Cartel.
  • They Sang - a short glimpse in the life of a Scarlet Crusade member
That's enough for now.

I'll take a cue from some of the others and seperate my favorites into the various 'verses'

Naruto
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3235597/1/An_Honest_Mistake - Tsunade has Sai address an assembly of shinobi, giving them all a chance to get to know him better. A misunderstanding on his part leads him to say things he shouldn't have.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3239665/1/C ... to_a_Fault - Same continuum as 'An Honest Mistake.' Angry at Shikamaru, Ino drags Sai out on a double date, Naruto and Hinata in tow. Was that a big mistake, or just what she needed? [Some off color humor]

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3245193/1/N ... Impossible - Follow up to 'An Honest Mistake' and 'Clueless To A Fault.' Sakura is very sad. That has Naruto worried. Can he and Hinata help Lee win her heart? Will Sai get in the way?

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3253833/1/S ... own_Better - Everyone was pestering Naruto and Hinata for dating tips. Ino even went as far as to arrange a large audience for them. What were they thinking? Same continuum as 'Nothing Is Impossible,' etc.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2173584/1/Y ... t_You_Want - Naruto is drinking, feeling sorry for himself. Can a certain girl help him find what he truly needs? [NaruHina]

All of which are by Dave-d who is defenitely one of my favorite fanfic authors. All of his stuff is great, but these are my favorites of his Naruto stuff.

Full Metal Panic!
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1887789/1/Christmas_Cake - Christmas Eve in Japan is not a religious event. Christmas is purely a commercial tradition. But, the night before Christmas does have romantic connotations.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1945821/1/G ... _To_Dinner - Kaname brings Sousuke home to meet her father. A continuation of the events in 'Christmas Cake.'

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1989347/1/Higher_Education - After Kaname and Sousuke helped save the TDD1 from Gauron, Sousuke was reassigned. Years later, going to Tokyo University, Kaname ran into a familiar face.

Once again, I like all of his stuff a lot, but these are the ones I have read and re-read the most.

Nadesico
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/746042/1/Loneliness - An emergency boson jump lands Akito and Ryoko in a parallel universe where they never joined the Nadesico's crew. Can they get back?

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/750846/1/Rings - Akito tries to straighten out the mess he is in with Ryoko and Yurika. A sequel to "Loneliness". Some foolish people asked for more.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/778017/1/Despair - Followup to "Rings". Set after the Nadesico movie. Spoilers.

Not, my favorite anime, and usually I'm a fan of the cannon pairings, but this concept was pulled off quite well and I found it intruiging. Yes, the writing could be better in a lot of aspects, and yes, I wish these fics were fleshed out into proper multi chapter stories, but there is just something about them that makes me want to go back and re-read them periodically and that is something that, I think has a value all it's own.

Eh, I think that's enough for now, though I may post more in the future, if I find one that I think needs to be brought to the groups attention. I am curious if there is anyone who has some Firefly fic recomendations, as I've been really dissapointed with the number & quality of what I've found on FF.net.

Oh? I'll be nice enough to even provide summaries.

Naruto
Ironically Dramatic by Laundry Detergent
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2304971/1/I ... y_Dramatic
Pairing- love triangle between Hinata, Itachi, and Gaara

Hanabi, the heiress to the great Hyuuga fortune has finally chosen two rich and likely candidates to complement the family. Now all that is left is to choose between the two. Unfortunately for her they both want Hinata, her elder sister and bodyguard. Humorously, she has no clue.

The reason I like it so much is because for one, Hinata is strong. :D And the other reason? The author provides good if not great dialogue. It may not be on par with Team 8, but still makes me smile.

Harry Potter
Pet Project by Caeria
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2290003/1/Pet_Project
Pairings- Hermionex Snape

Once a problem is brought to her attention Hermione can't let go of it. She pursues the solution with the tenacity of a bulldog. And so, what becomes of her as she tries to understand/ make things better for her potions teacher?

I admit the pairing is a bit weird but the story/plot more then makes up for it. Keep an open mind.

Those are pretty much it. I guess i go for slightly crackers pairings but if it's believable (and good) then i'll definitely read it.

One more thing, if I had the time i would read Marquis Black's works. He seems quite the character. ^_______^

I wouldn't call it a favorite of mine....yet, but Never Cut Twice has turned out rather well for me so far. It's what most would consider a crack pairing fic (Naruto and Temari) but I think it was decent.......if you can stand that little is taken seriously in the fic. For example Itachi is addicted to pocky and he and Kisame at one point get into a food fight. Kabuto at one point makes up his own lyrics to "I'm too Sexy". So if you can deal with the madness read Never Cut Twice for some good laughs.

Last I heard, shortly after his most recent post of Realms, was that Vasquez had been having some sort of family crisis (A relative's death, IIRC) and wasn't going to be writing anything for a while.

If you want an excellent completed fic, I'd suggest the Ranma 1/2 story titled Relentless (http://www.talesfromthevault.com/relentless/). It is one of the best Ranma fics ever.

I checked out 'Relentless', and it was good enough to read from start to finish. An excellent, classic Ranma adventure story. Takes a while to pick up momentum, but overall, the writing and the execution of the plot is very well done. Not my favorite type of story, but well worth the time it took me to read. Thanks for the rec!

I know of Carrotglace's stuff - he writes well, but unfortunately, he tends to keep the thoughts, goals and motivations of his self-insert characters so close to his chest that I spent large amounts of his fics thinking things like "why is he doing this?", "is there a point to all this?" and "this is going nowhere...". Eventually, I just gave up on reading his stuff. If it weren't for how opaque those characters are, his stories would probably be among my favorites.

Someone recommended 'Ill Met By Starlight', another Ranma fic. Not exactly my type of story, but still gripping enough for me to finish it. It keeps you guessing about the hidden motivations of the characters and despite the not-so-satisfying less-than-happy end, I enjoyed reading it. If you like dark, thriller like stories and don't mind character deaths, go check this out!

Some of you simply post lists of your favorites, without any additional info. Go on, elaborate a bit. Tell us what makes those stories special, unique and fun to read. Tell us why you like them!

Finally, a recommendation of my own. This was recommended on the Yahoo group long ago, and I still haven't found something comparable to it since then.

Persephone Kore's 'Time's Riddle' series

Installments:

'Who We Are'
'Trouble Brewing'
'Worth a Thousand Words'
'Life Study'
'Grim Tidings'
'The Gift of the Magus'
'Unexpected Contact'

Wow... this is *good*. An awe-inspiring, beautiful, heart-wrenching tale of what kind of person Tom Riddle could have been with just a little nudge in the right direction at a crucial moment.

Short summary: At the beginning of Ginny's second year, Voldemort, brought back to life by a freak accident involving a quasi-horcrux, pays a visit to Hogwarts. Reminiscing about his memories of himself at Harry's age, he recreates the twelve-year old image of Tom Riddle. However, Harry notices that Tom is more than a mere illusion, and, in a burst of inspired brilliance, talks him into turning against Voldemort. Using their combined connection to Voldemort, Harry helps Tom drain the life out of Voldemort, finishing him off once and for all.

The ensuing series follows Tom as he resumes his education at Hogwarts after a hiatus of fifty-four years, showing how he deals with everyone's expectations and fears, how he eventually makes some friends and starts living his own live that isn't overshadowed by Voldemort's legacy.

The premise is unique and well-chosen, and the execution is flawless. The characters are beautifully written, and the author perfectly captures that feeling of unspoiled wonder that fills the first books of the series. The author does a terrific job of illustrating Tom's unique predicament and for that she has my utmost respect. In all the stories I've read, I haven't found a single Harry Potter that captures my heart in the way the Tom Riddle of this series does.

The installments are only a couple of decent-sized chapters each, so don't be intimidated by the multitude of links. I wish Persephone Kore would write more of this, but unfortunately she appears to be done with this universe. More's the pity.

'Relentless' is indeed one of the best pure Ranma 1/2 fics to be found online. However, for some really good Ranma crossovers I highly recommend Lathis (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/992366/Lathis) and Cap'n Chryssalid (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/235984/Capn_Chryssalid), both of whom possess one of the rarest talents in fanficdom: the ability to take two completely disparate universes and combine them as naturally as chocolate and peanut butter.

Lathis' The Titans and the Lost Boy and sequel Dark Titans are the best merger of anime and American cartoon that I've ever seen, managing to keep the blend of slapstick humor, awkward teenage romance, and superhuman action from both source canons intact throughout 23 chapters for the first and 25 and counting on the second. Together, an enjoyable weekends worth of reading. (For a comedic appetizer try Lathis Welcome Home?. Anyone who has ever read a bad Ranma crossover will laugh. Guaranteed.) ;)

For something a little (much) more serious Cap'n Chryssalid's The Road to Cydonia will not dissapoint. Yes, it is a crossover with XCOM. No, you don't need to have ever played it to get into the story. It's about what happens to the NWC when they are dragged into a war that's far beyond thier definition of combat: why they stay, how they adapt, and how their presence changes the rules. An excellent choice when you're in the mood for darker themes.

Never Cut Twice is one, it's also got a pretty decent Temari/Naruto pairing going on. There's a Flame of Recca/Naruto crossover that has Domon from FoR wielding it too, that one's called Hokage no Isan and it's pretty good too, plus it's a decent Naru/Hina. My only complaint with that one is the lack of translations for Japanese terms and names.
"Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move."

As for myself, I'll just throw in two of my favorite authors.

Nonjon
Rorschach's Blot

Nonjon has quite possibly the best HP/Firefly crossover in existence, while Rorschach's Blot always has some interesting ideas, even if I've come to realize his writing isn't the greatest. I really enjoy reading his odd ideas file.

I second tragedy of repetition's rec. It's a rather unique time travel fic, and I really enjoy that Naruto.

I know I recommended it at least once on the mailing list, but I'm pretty sure I haven't brought it up here, The Great Romantic:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3810394/1/T ... t_Romantic

Not only does this have my favorite, not being shipped with Naruto Hinata that I've ever read, it is also responsible for any and all fondness I have for Naruto/Tenten. It's also hilarious.

Hm, I've read a couple, but none of them were any good. Most of them pretty much have Naruto become a Kakashi clone, and his team is pretty much a repeat of Team 7/Team Yellow Flash/Team Sannin. People love symmetry, yeah, but it just got to be of a ridiculous level. Personally, I'm on the lookout for a fic that starts a new leaf with that concept. Where Naruto is Naruto, and the genin aren't just carbon copies of himself, Sasuke and Sakura. *sigh*
