A fic that's a nice deconstructive parody of the Harry gets sent to Azkaban fic called All the Dementors of Azakaban. Wish I'd though of it as it absolutely skewers that fic premise nicely. This recommendation brought to you by your friendly neighborhood TVTropes.

Apologies for the double post here, but...

A sci-fi Harry Potter in the truest sense. I'm not saying Harry Potter with a sci-fi twist, but the Harry Potter series as an actual science fiction series. Harry Potter and the Freedom of Flight is a very interesting series which shows how the Harry Potter verse could work in a science fiction setting. There is magic, but it's a lot more subtle, has a sciency feel to it, and things are certainly different.

"Tom Riddle was able to use magic long before he received a wand. In this AU, Harry has the same grasp on his magic...and a hatred for Muggles...Watch the birth of evil. Smart!Dark!Evil!Harry, All 7 Years"
One of the best dark!Harry fics I've ever read (and only just recovered from the depths of my memory with the help of Tempest Kitsune) and it is from DisobedienceWriter, the same who wrote "Knowledge is Useful..."

Also, seconding 'Freedom of Flight', and thirding 'Evil Be Thou My Good'.

Life. All normal and stuff. With jobs and houses and boring-y, woring-y things like that. Normality, as Harry Potter realises, does not attract mad men in little blue boxes, so any hope of seeing his old friend the Doctor again is pretty slim. But then Ginny Weasley notices the sky is falling, and everything goes completely to hell.
TheAngelsHaveThePhoneBox has started a sequel to "That Which Holds The Image" and it looks to be just as good as the original!

EDIT: On further consideration and reading, the fic went too far in the wrong direction and I'm retracting the recommendation. The initial idea was promising and it started well, but it went too far in some directions.

I'm still reading it, but considering some of the content, I'm withdrawing my recommendation.

I think I know why. When I recommended Fate's Gamble, it had some promise, but went too far in some ways. The guy isn't bad in many respects, but... well... On the other hand, I know have some good nightmare fuel cluttering my mind. The content of it is not appropriate for the forum and I should have withdrawn it after it passed that point.

Never mind, it's not on the list anyway (if it does, I'm de-reccing it like the Fist of the North Star)...

Recommending this gem of humor: Real Life Sucks

Anyone done Home-Ec and remember all the skills that it taught? How about Life Skills classes. Take that and put it into Hogwarts for the Seventh Year students. What do you get? Humor, drama, a lot of laughs, and so on.

You know, I actually meant to rec that, like a month ago. Then I forgot. :D So, seconding it.

Also, oooh, new chapter since I last saw it!

Oh, you want more?

Well, if this hasn't been recc'd yet, the HP x James Bond crossover Second World is worth a read. While some aspects of it I don't like (the Evil! and Manipulative! Dumbledore is really played up here), the fic is actually pretty good.

I've found one that's in a different vein from things like NoFP and Backward With Purpose: Faery Heroes Just a forewarning, its pretty heavy on the Dumbledore and Weasley bashing, but I believe that was part of the challenge it was meant to take up. I mostly like it because I am...none too fond of Ron and Molly. The rest are alright, but those two got on my nerves, in canon.

Found a good crossover between Harry Potter and Sword Art Online called Magic Online. Currently still in progress, but a solid read anyway.

Summary: It has always been said that magic and technology did not mix; too bad no one ever mentioned that little fact to young Harry Potter. Add in one mad genius bent on destroying the lives of ten thousand people by trapping them inside of his online virtual reality game and you have the makings of a very dangerous brew

I'm surprised to see that the list doesn't have anything by White Squirrel or Starfox 5, two prolific Harry Potter fanfic authors who are every bit as talented as the Authorlord.

The best of White Squirrel's fanfics are:

A Little Child Shall Lead Them (complete)
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10871795/1 ... -Lead-Them
A do-over where Hermione travels back far enough to save James and Lily.

The Arithmancer and sequel Lady Archimedes (ongoing)
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10070079/1/The-Arithmancer
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11463030/1/Lady-Archimedes
Hermione is less a bookworm, more a maths prodigy. Lady Archimedes features the definitive portrayal of Delores Umbridge, who is at least an order of magnitude more evil than in canon. In my opinion this fic is actually better than Nightmares of Future Past.

The Accidental Animagus, sequel Animagus at War, and spin-off set between the two The World of the Accidental Animagus (Animagus at War ongoing, the other two complete)
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9863146/1/ ... l-Animagus
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12088294/1/Animagus-at-War
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12076644/1 ... l-Animagus
Accidental magic turns Harry into an animagus at a very early age. He runs off as a cat and is then adopted by certain a family of dentists.

A Dramatic Reading (complete)
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12324284/1 ... ic-Reading
It's year 5, Umbridge discovers copies of the Harry Potter books in the Room of Requirement. Having read partway through the first one, she decides to have them publicly read in the Great Hall. Unlike most fics with this premise, this one has a solid plot.

The best of Starfox5's fics are:

Hermione Granger and the Marriage Law Revolution (complete)
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10595005/1 ... Revolution
What do the muggleborns do when the Wizengamot tries to pass the fanfic cliché of a marriage law? Re-enact the French Revolution.

Patron (complete)
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11080542/1/Patron
Muggleborns are a tiny minority, and are required to be beholden to a pureblood family starting in their second year. A technicality means that muggle-raised Harry Potter is able to become the patron to one Hermione Granger.

Divided and Entwined (complete)
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11910994/1 ... d-Entwined
When Voldemort returns instead of pretending he isn't back, the ministry decide to appease him by passing Nazi-like laws against Muggleborns. They never expected the muggleborns to strike back, starting a three-way (or possibly four-way) wizarding war.

Harry Potter and the Lady Thief (ongoing)
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12592097/1 ... Lady-Thief
In second year Malfoy frames Hermione for theft, forcing her to be expelled from Hogwarts. What does she do? Train to become a real thief, of course.

I've enjoyed everything written by Worfe - s/he has even written an authorised one-shot in the NoFP universe, "A Night at the Burrow". Anyway, "Timely Errors" is full-length and complete.

I'll second The Arithmancer because I think it's worth a read, but I won't second the sequel. The first book had a mildly interesting premise and quite a good exploration of that premise. The second, though, veers sharply into Hermione Sue territory.

I would sort of like to second Divided and Entwined, but I didn't actually finish it, so I won't. It's LONG. But it has an impressive treatment of "war is hell" and how such a war might actually pan out. If you like light and fluffy, don't bother, but it's thought-provoking.

I don't really see that. The sequel starts with a fifth year in which Hermione goes through absolute hell at the hands of Umbridge and nearly suffers (another) breakdown. Once the war properly kicks off, she makes plenty of foolish mistakes, and ends up almost working herself to death trying to find a way to remove Harry's horcrux. She retains the same character flaws throughout both fics. Yes, she does become seriously powerful (the premise of Hermione being a maths genius and arithmancy being essentially spellcrafting through maths makes that inevitable), but the level of threat, danger, and conflict continues to rise throughout the two fics, and it genuinely felt like the final victory was only barely achieved (which I can't honestly say of canon), and it also felt like victory took a much greater cost than in canon.

I'll acknowledge that I didn't actually finish Lady Archimedes (although I was up to date at the time I gave up on it; it only recently finished). However:
She retains the same character flaws throughout both fics.
Not that I saw. She has some real personal struggles in The Arithmancer that I just didn't see plaguing her in Lady Archimedes.
the level of threat, danger, and conflict continues to rise throughout the two fics
Again, I wasn't seeing this. It seemed like a continual cycle of "new challenge -> Hermione invents a new spell to solve it", and on at least one occasion, when there was a really gripping setback, it was effectively retconned out in the next chapter.
and it genuinely felt like the final victory was only barely achieved (which I can't honestly say of canon), and it also felt like victory took a much greater cost than in canon.
Well, I can't comment on that part, except to say that I was no longer enjoying it enough to get that far. Which is a shame, because White Squirrel is talented; I've at least tried most of his/her stories, and enjoyed most of them to one extent or another.
