Okay, first order of business: I'm outta here. For the most part, anyway. Likely not to return until way after New Years, but that's subject to change. Ewuvi'll fill you in on the details if you ask, because I've got a headache. See ya.

I will pop in sporadically to deal with Kojira. Once every two days, once every day if I can handle it.

Second order of business: Saw Avatar. Nice visual, Crysis in terms of scenery porn, nice SFX. Unfortunately, the flat plot, excessive symbolism, cliche'd characterization and the fact that I could figure out every damn single Cherkov device that approached makes it a mediocre movie that would've done a lot better if it spent half the excess 400 million on script. Discuss, you monkeys.

My brother said pretty much the same thing about avatar. Pretty, but hella predictable and cliche.

I think I'm just gonna go see it, and then form my own opinion on my experience. That said, the brothers made a good point on hype, and it's effects on how you perceive movies. Thankfully I wasn't aware of the (apparently) huge hype for Avatar, so I'm going in with little preconceptions other then some small details here and a film synopsis or two.

The only hype I has been exposed regarding Avatar is that it's supposed to be a milestone regarding visual effects in cinema. To tell the truth, that is the only reason why I'm willing to watch it in theaters.

So, as long as the SFX don't dissapoint, I will enjoy the movie even if the story is as formulaic and full of cliches as everyone has stated. :)

The visual effects has been the only thing I have enjoyed from other sci-fi movies, after all. At least, the fact that it was directed by James Cameron give me some hope that it was better directed and written than Independence Day, Armaggedon, The Day after Tomorrow, and the like.

Romance was not required in the movie, destroyed the character of the female protagonist. Cannot find the Tropes page that isn't a discussion.

Avatar looks pretty. Also, I haven't seen Dances With Wolves or whatever, so I don't actually know the plot yet. I'll probably see it when it hits the dollar theater.

Agreed. Downy Jr. was practically made for the role I think.

I was going to go on a rant about how they bastardized what Sherlock Holmes was really about...

...before I realized that I don't really care that much and that I'm probably going to enjoy the movie immensely. :D
