TouHou in a (rather large) nutshell:

-Zune makes Bullet-Curtain games.

-Zune is bad at drawing, but makes the central characters/bosses chibi animu females.

-The internet (and Japan) collectively squee, giving birth to the ENTIRE MYTHOS of the TouHou setting.

-I'm not kidding, Zune just makes the games. He hasn't touched "canon" almost at all, but the fandom has already carved in stone the personalities of just about EVERYONE in EVERY GAME.

-TouHou music is EPIC WIN.

-Games are EPIC WIN.

-Easy Mod-o is for babbys (sic).

-Fan remixes of songs are beyond awesome. For example... OR THIS, THIS RIGHT HERE, CLICK HERE!

-Seriously, just YouTube-search "Iosys" They be crazy dope yo, fo sho! :3

Really, Touhou's foundations are Memes and Music.

I do believe that ZUN has created a kinda-sorta canon, but it's mostly buried under the sheer weight that is Touhou fanon. Can't say for sure though; I'm terrible at things like bullet hell. Stupid special stages and their stupid collecting of Blue Spheres...

To each their own Kirai. I'm not a huge fan of shooters, and my brother isn't as obsessed with RPGs as I am, but we have at least a few games that we can both agree are awesome.

Yeah but have you seen those? They redefine hard. This isn't about awesome or not. Because anybody capable of beating those (not on easy mode) is not human anymore.

They have transcended the petty concerns of humanity and gone to the level beyond that.
