2nd Magic the Gathering Tournament

Unread postby Magnificate » October 20th, 2010, 4:08 pm

Dervon wanted to organize the 1st MtG Tournament, but isn’t online that often lately. Perhaps we could try it again?

As before, we could play via LackeyCCG (and Skype). As for deckbuilding restrictions, let’s say that we can use cards no older than Masques Block. Of course, no need for hardcore tournament decks, casual stuff is perfectly fine and often more fun.

Anyone interested?

My decks are way back home in Romania and I'm not getting them until sometime in December. Not that I really have enough time for this anyway :(

I'm in. My deck is pretty low on the power scale, but I have fun with it.

Is Skype necessary? Because I'd love to participate, but with Skype's hatred of my computer, I need to know. Maybe I could use my dad's computer...

No, but it is much more convenient to have some sort of communicator.

*Pretends he didn't have to Google AIM*

We'll work something out. At the very least Lackey has an inbuilt chatbox.

Interested, but that would mean I'd need to put a deck back together.

I'd be up for playing something. I personally prefer to draft in tournament play. Does the software support that type of play?

I guess I'm in. Masques block... That was the one before Invasion, right? Most of the good older cards were probably reprinted in a base set anyway, I suppose...

I'm going to have to look at these newer sets, I guess. Or I'll be stopping the game to learn the rules for everything more recent than Lorwyn.

I don't know the software that well, but I definitely support drafting. Drafting is awesome.

I don't think that is possible with Lackey, though I would like to be proven wrong. For now, it's constructed play.
I'll write up more info in the morning. :z_z_Z:

OK, so the Tournament results table would look something like that. I'd say we could awards standard 3 points for victories, 1 point for draws and 0 points for losses. Since we don't really know how much time it would take I'd say there should be only one game played between each player. We could then have 3-game Finals played between two players with highest scores at the end of the tournament. Or perhaps Semifinals as well if there are more players.

As for rules, I'd say current MtG rules should apply. We can't guarantee to have a judge on board during each match so arbitration would not always be possible. Would that be a major problem?

As for decks, is there anyone not attending the tournament that would like to keep the decklists and check their legality before we begin?

You can download Lackey here and its Magic plugin is here.

My Skype id is MagnificatePL.

Wittgen and I tested out some draft simulations at tappedout.net. We could easily get together a draft tournament if people are willing to get accounts. We did 2 Magic 2011 drafts, and I can say with some certainity that GB in that setup is really really strong. I'd say we do some Scars of Mirroden drafting but the Lackey plugin doesn't have support for those sets.

I will recommend Shards/Conflux/Reborn as one of the best draft sets I've ever played, but if you aren't familiar with how to draft those sets you will steamrolled.

So, how do you do drafts on that site?

As for constructed play, do you think we should store our decklists or is that not necessary?

On tappedout.net once you are signed in, you go to Draft Simulator, and then click Host Live MTG Draft. It takes you to a page where you select what three packs you want to draft with, and how many seats there will be in the draft. Once you have started the draft, it will appear on the front page of the "Draft Simulator" and other players (who are also logged in) can click a join option. Once the table is filled up, the site generates packs for everyone and the draft begins.

After that's done you would take the draft list you made and build a 40 card deck from it in Lackey (remembering of course that you can add as much basic land as you want), and get into games against other players participating in the draft.

If you want, I'd be glad to run the first draft tournament. We'd just need to decide a time and format (again, I recommend 2011/2011/2011 for ease of entry)
