Yes, the name is stupid, there's some fridge brilliance in the kanji used though.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a deconstruction of the magic girl genre by SHAFT, full of sparkles and rainbows and fridge horror. It's also the first anime I've really looked forward to for a couple of seasons.
Couple of things: there will be spoilers, you have been warned. So posters don't bother with spoiler tags from when gg's subs come out.

The opening sequence is changing.
The witches are one of the things I'm finding most interesting at the moment, their names are all spelled out in substitution cypher german and some information about them is given on the Japanese site.
The one who killed Mami was Charlotte, she appears to have been a hospital (probably cancer) patient, the sweets she makes are things she couldn't have on a hospital diet, the cheese is something you can't have while undergoing chemotherapy.
The one Sayaka fought when she started despairing and generally losing it was Elsa Maria, there are hints she might have been
Kyouko's sister.
This one may be Mami's witch form.
I'm interested to know who became the Walpurgisnacht witch, evidently there's a prequel manga starting when the series ends, so maybe her? Someone pointed out it may be Homura as time travel screws everything.
Also Madoka seems to be getting more powerful with the loops, defeating Walpurgisnacht on the most recent one along with remembering some of it.
The grief seed Madoka used on Homura during one of the loops appears to be Sayaka's.
