We need to team up with this younger bear to defeat the older bear. It is our only option! (Well, I suppose we could just fly away, but that would be boring from a meta standpoint.) If the opportunity arises, we should perform a combination attack with the younger bear.

Let me tell you all something: it's not easy translating bear strength into statistics.

---------------------

In that instant Mia felt something swell within her: a righteous energy that drove her fear into the corners of her mind, replacing the timid nature that had once stood there with a great resolve. That resolve told her to do one thing and one thing only: help the younger bear by beating up the bigger bear!

A small voice somewhere in the corner of her mind raised doubts, but they were quickly washed away by the need to see this bear defeated.

"Flight don't fail me now." Mia muttered as she took a deep breath, knowing that the adult bear wasn't paying any attention to her at all, thus opening it up-

Flight Roll(1d20)+2: 15,+2 Total:17

-for her to swoop down and show this bear who was the boss!

Flight Attack (Strength + Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+6: 19,+6 Total:25
Adult Bear Dodge (Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+4: 11,+4 Total:15
Adult Bear Resist Stummbling (Strength) Roll(1d20)+10: 13,+10 Total:23
Adult Bear Resist Damage (Constitution) Roll(1d20)+10: 13,+10 Total:23

Mia flew up several feet into the air, taking in a deep breath as she leaned her head back, looping backwards as she tried to pick up momentum for the coming attack. Swooping out of her loop straight towards the bear Mia pulled her fist back and, catching the bear off guard, slammed her fist into the bear's skull.

The adult black bear ended up stummbling back about two feet, shaking its head slightly as it let growled at Mia, bearing its large canines at the new combatant. As impressive as Mia's attack was, the bear didn't seem to be too badly injured.

Mia Initiative (Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+3: 1,+3 Total:4 (7 While in Flight)
Adult Bear Initiative (Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+4: 13,+4 Total:17
Adolescent Bear Initiative (Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+3: 17,+3 Total:20

The younger black bear seemed utterly confused by the situation. After all, who could blame it. Out of nowhere a weird flying thing and an adult black bear came into what it was trying to establish as its territory. The latter tried to attack, while the former had attacked the older, stronger bear.

Still, the young bear's animalistic mind couldn't entirely wrap its head around the entire situation: what it could wrap its head around was that there was another male adult trying to encroach on its territory.

Adolescent Bear Attack (Strength + 1/2 Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+10: 19,+10 Total:29
Adult Bear Dodge (Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+4: 3,+4 Total:7
Adult Bear Resist Stummbling (Strength) Roll(1d20)+10: 19,+10 Total:29
Adult Bear Resist Damage (Constitution) Roll(1d20)+10: 15,+10 Total:25

The younger black bear charged its elder, letting out its own roar as it raised its paw and struck the adult across the face. The adult bear, distracted by Mia, couldn't dodge the blow, but the younger black bear couldn't make the oler bear move. However, a nice series of scratches from the younger bear's paw was clear on the adult bear's face.

Adult Bear Attack (Strength + 1/2 Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+12: 10,+12 Total:22
Adolescent Bear Dodge (Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+3: 17,+3 Total:20
Adolescent Bear Resist Stummbling (Strength) Roll(1d20)+8: 6,+8 Total:14
Adolescent Bear Resist Damage (Constitution) Roll(1d20)+8: 7,+8 Total:15

The younger bear's attack would not go unpunished. The older bear swung its larger, heavier paw in a wide arc, catching the younger bear's neck and shoulder. The younger bear was sent backwards, seemingly lifting off the ground for a moment as it ended up a couple feet away from the adult bear.

Mia Flight Attack (Strength + Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+6: 4,+6 Total:10
Adult Bear Dodge (Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+4: 8,+4 Total:12
Adolescent Bear Attack (Strength + 1/2 Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+10: 5,+10 Total:15
Adult Bear Dodge (Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+4: 13,+4 Total:17

The next two attacks by Mia and the younger black bear could be called feeble at best. Mia swooped in, attempting to hit the adult bear at full speed, only to just barely knick the edge of its ear as the bear moved out of the way. The younger black bear, however, ran up to the adult bear and tried to hit it, the adult bear dodging by jumping back-

Adult Bear Attack (Strength + 1/2 Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+12: 14,+12 Total:26
Adolescent Bear Dodge (Dexterity) Roll(1d20)+3: 2,+3 Total:5
Adolescent Bear Resist Stummbling (Strength) Roll(1d20)+8: 2,+8 Total:10
Adolescent Bear Resist Damage (Constitution) Roll(1d20)+8: 14,+8 Total:22

-and then promptly ramming full speed into the younger bear. The charge, while it didn't hurt the younger bear too badly, it did send the young bear careening across the clearing, several feet away from either Mia or the adult bear.

New Strategy?

Throw stuff at the adult bear. Branches, stones, whatever, and keep backing away, try to give the little bear time to regroup.

Let's stay on the ground for now. Our flight is too unreliable to give us a sure advantage in this fight. Go with ewuvi's plan of throw shit at it and try to stay out of its paw range.

I agree with start throwing projectiles at the adult bear. I think we should also look for something we could use as a concussive weapon (a big branch to use as a bat for example).

I'm not sure if being on land is a good idea. We don't have perfect control over our flight yet, but it gives up the benefits of maneuverability and momentum to increase the damage from our attacks.

May seem like a cop out, but we should grab a big rock or heavy branch, fly up over the adult bear, and drop the rock on it. Gravity is a harsh mistress.

I agree with the drop-stuff-from-above solution. Remember that being airborne keeps out of animal reach.

Speaking of gravity being a harsh mistress, we should figure out what exactly allows us to defy gravity. Do we have unconscious control over gravitonic fields? Can we develop that into conscious control? It could be why we're able to run fast (lightening our relative weight so our muscles can work towards speed) and hit hard (increasing our relative weight so the other guy is hit with more than what we're actually working with). If our powers are the result of gravitonic control (which would be pretty cool), we could, in theory, develop into a form of telekinesis. Plus, we would have a built in catch phrase (the aforementioned gravity being a harsh mistress).

Hmm, that's plausible, though that doesn't factor in our healing factor. Perhaps its a meta thing, though. I sort of like the idea of our meta abilities being a reflection of what we want/need subconsciously and for whatever reason it manifest with its own set of rules. Sort of like how meta abilities works for the Novas in Aberrant

Also, yes, lets kill a bear with gravity! (you guys have no idea how much enjoyment I'm getting from this silly bear fight xP)

This is how I thought this quest would be from the start. Silly fun, played straight. Need to train? Go wrestle a bear.

Of course, this isn't topping the greatest bear fight of all time, from the old Hercules movie, with Lou Ferrigno, where a bear got tossed into outer space. Seriously, that is what happened.

Mia succeeds on another Flight Check

Mia watched in stunned silence as the adult bear began to make a move towards the younger bear, before getting a grip on herself as she looked around the clearing for anything to toss at the bear.

Boulder Roll(1d100)+0: 56,+0 Total:56
Branch Roll(1d100)+0: 78,+0 Total:78

Mia notices quite a few nice sized boulders in the vecinity. With any luck, gravity should help her toss them down on top of the bear's head. (Boulders, +2 Thrown, +4 Gravity Dropped)

Meanwhile, Mia also noticed very thick tree branches from the various pines and oaks surrounding her. They didn't quite look like they'd be good to drop, but they'd probably be amazing clubs. (Sturdy Branches, +3 Weaponized, +1 Thrown)

Mia quickly flew over to one of the boulders and picked it up, flying up into the air as she prepared to throw it down towards the adult bear.

Mia Attack (Strength + Dex + Boulder) Roll(1d20)+10: 11,+10 Total:21
Adult Bear Dodge (Dex) Roll(1d20)+4: 3,+4 Total:7
Adult Bear Stummbling Resistance (Str) Roll(1d20)+10: 19,+10 Total:29
Adult Bear Damage Resistance (Con) Roll(1d20)+10: 18,+10 Total:28

To Mia's horror, the bear saw the boulder coming and, rather than move to dodge it, the bear swung its paw at the incoming projectile, the boulder being flung across the clearing and bursting into pieces against a tree. The bear's paw didn't even look hurt.

However, she did manage to get the bear's attention at least. That bought the adolescent bear some time to at least get back onto its feet.

Adolescent Bear Morale (Con) Roll(1d20)+8: 19,+8 Total:27

The younger bear still looked ready to fight, but it would need a few more seconds before it would be ready to get back into the fight. Meanwhile, the older bear uselessly swipped its paws towards Mia, who's airborne position allowed her to avoid the bear.

When the bear seemed to be just distracted enough, Mia quickly swooped down to another boulder, picking it up and lifting it into the air just before the bear could get at her.

Mia Attack (Strength + Dex + Boulder) Roll(1d20)+10: 19,+10 Total:29
Bear Dodge (Dex) Roll(1d20)+4: 19,+4 Total:23
Bear Resist Stummble (Str) Roll(1d20)+10: 14,+10 Total:24
Bear Resist Damage (Con) Roll(1d20)+10: 9,+10 Total:19

This time the boulder aimed straight and true. Mia threw the large stone down at the bear, slamming right into the adult's head. The boulder burst into pieces on impact, the adult bear giving a pained roar as Mia could see she definitely left a mark: a large splotch of red had formed on the bear's head. Although the bear had taken a very serious blow, it didn't seem as though it would kill the bear.

Adolescent Bear Attack (Strength + 1/2 Dex) Roll(1d20)+10: 10,+10 Total:20
Adult Bear Dodge (Dex) Roll(1d20)+4: 7,+4 Total:11
Adult Bear Resist Stummbling (Str) Roll(1d20)+10: 15,+10 Total:25
Adult Bear Resist Damage (Con) Roll(1d20)+10: 6,+10 Total:16

That is, until the adolescent black bear charged forth, slamming its paw into the body of the adult bear. Although the older bear didn't stumble, there was now a noticeable wobble to its stance. It had taken quite a bit of damage and didn't seem like it would remain conscious long.

Adult Bear Morale (1/2 Con (Near Collapse Penalty)) Roll(1d20)+5: 4,+5 Total:9

Whether the adult bear knew this itself is uncertain. What was certain was that this bear lost whatever will to fight it had in it. The bear ran off with an awkward run, stummbling and nearly falling as it ran through the trees. The adolescent bear gave a loud roar in the direction of the adult bear, while Mia looked on at the scene with a small grin.

Gently approach the adolescent bear, make sure to walk right in front of it so it knows were coming. Don't grab for it, just let our hand come out and let it sniff it or whatever. If it tries to bite down, fly away.

Yeah, Specinator's suggestion is the most sensible, and probably the safest. But if we can, we should definitely high-five the bear. Because he's awesome. We should also name him Vojtek.

If we approach it calmly (and I don't see why we wouldn't, seeing as how we can trump and probably kill a full grown adult bear), then a bear five might not be too out of the question. We just gotta play it smart, and not scare the poor thing into doing something stupid. Like attacking us. So yeah, let us take the cautious, gentle approach with our wild bear friend. :B

EDIT: By the way, while I'm all for being sensible with a wild animal, I do want to say Arg that once again you prove why I love this quest and why it is sheer awesome that you allowed us to fight a full grown adult bear and help an adolescent bear expand it's territory. xD

EDITEDIT @ Rigger: I like the name, but I'm gonna suggest Ursoc. :D

EDITEDITEDIT: Nevermind, after looking up the name's history I am all for Vojtek. xD

Mia grinned wildly as she watched the older bear run, pumping her fist into the air with great enthusiasm as she flew down to the ground by the adolescent bear. The bear seemed to just stare at her while she raised her hand up into the air.

"Oh yeah, high five!" Mia shouted, keeping hr hand up for the bear. Somewhere in her mind she knew this was rather silly, but nonetheless she really just wanted to high-five this bear! The bear just seemed to stare at her for a moment or two, tilting it's head slightly to the side. Mia stared anxiously at the bear, feeling somewhat nervous under it's gaze. Her nerves jumped slightly when the bear raised both it's arms above its head with a small growl.

Only to land them on top of her shoulders and rub up against her...

IT WAS A BEAR HUG~!

Mia returned the bear's hug, grinning like a madwoman as she returned the bear's gesture. Soon enough the bear got off from her, staring up at her again before slowly turning and walking back into the forest.
