One of the best dark!Harry fics I've ever read (and only just recovered from the depths of my memory with the help of Tempest Kitsune) and it is from DisobedienceWriter, the same who wrote "Knowledge is Useful...""Tom Riddle was able to use magic long before he received a wand. In this AU, Harry has the same grasp on his magic...and a hatred for Muggles...Watch the birth of evil. Smart!Dark!Evil!Harry, All 7 Years"

TheAngelsHaveThePhoneBox has started a sequel to "That Which Holds The Image" and it looks to be just as good as the original!Life. All normal and stuff. With jobs and houses and boring-y, woring-y things like that. Normality, as Harry Potter realises, does not attract mad men in little blue boxes, so any hope of seeing his old friend the Doctor again is pretty slim. But then Ginny Weasley notices the sky is falling, and everything goes completely to hell.

Anyone done Home-Ec and remember all the skills that it taught? How about Life Skills classes. Take that and put it into Hogwarts for the Seventh Year students. What do you get? Humor, drama, a lot of laughs, and so on.

I don't really see that. The sequel starts with a fifth year in which Hermione goes through absolute hell at the hands of Umbridge and nearly suffers (another) breakdown. Once the war properly kicks off, she makes plenty of foolish mistakes, and ends up almost working herself to death trying to find a way to remove Harry's horcrux. She retains the same character flaws throughout both fics. Yes, she does become seriously powerful (the premise of Hermione being a maths genius and arithmancy being essentially spellcrafting through maths makes that inevitable), but the level of threat, danger, and conflict continues to rise throughout the two fics, and it genuinely felt like the final victory was only barely achieved (which I can't honestly say of canon), and it also felt like victory took a much greater cost than in canon.I'll second The Arithmancer because I think it's worth a read, but I won't second the sequel. The first book had a mildly interesting premise and quite a good exploration of that premise. The second, though, veers sharply into Hermione Sue territory.
Not that I saw. She has some real personal struggles in The Arithmancer that I just didn't see plaguing her in Lady Archimedes. She retains the same character flaws throughout both fics.
Again, I wasn't seeing this. It seemed like a continual cycle of "new challenge -> Hermione invents a new spell to solve it", and on at least one occasion, when there was a really gripping setback, it was effectively retconned out in the next chapter.the level of threat, danger, and conflict continues to rise throughout the two fics
Well, I can't comment on that part, except to say that I was no longer enjoying it enough to get that far. Which is a shame, because White Squirrel is talented; I've at least tried most of his/her stories, and enjoyed most of them to one extent or another.and it genuinely felt like the final victory was only barely achieved (which I can't honestly say of canon), and it also felt like victory took a much greater cost than in canon.
