A little taste of Chapter 16…

(Here’s a little something to tide you over while I keep banging on Team 8-16 and work on NoFP-36 with my betas… This is un-beta-ed, and there is no guarantee it will make the cut for the final version.)

Naruto was just leaving the hospital when one of the chuunin that assisted the Hokage caught up to him.

“Naruto-san, the Hokage would like to see you as soon as possible,” the young man said in an oddly respectful tone.

Naruto frowned. It was almost time for his next session with Gai-sensei. Well, there wasn’t anything he could do about it. He created another clone and instructed it to find Gai-sensei and tell him Naruto had been summoned to the Hokage’s office.

Naruto turned back to the chuunin, who looked slightly disconcerted, and simply said “Let’s go.”

The chuunin set a brisk pace, but Naruto wished they could get there sooner. He had no idea what jii-san wanted, but the way this day had gone so far, it probably wasn’t good.

At least Hinata had liked the sweet bean buns.

  1. Yes, I went out of my way to find something that didn’t reveal any major plot points. But you can wonder why Naruto has been summoned by the Hokage. Maybe some factions of the council finally gained enough leverage to Sarutobi to annull Naruto’s victory over Sasuke…

  2. Against all logic, I’m almost hoping that it’s something related to either Jiraiya, or perhaps Gaara. Either way, I’m going to go mad wondering what’s going to happen now. *bangs head against wall* Perhaps I should have saved myself the pain and just ignored the snippet?

  3. My personal guess would be that Gai gave the X-ray to the Hokage and he want to discuss it with Naruto. I always thought that Naruto healing abilities were his and not related to the Kyuubi. My main reason to believe so was during the chuunin exam’s preliminaries where Naruto healing kick in like always, but the Kyuubi’s chakra was suppressed by Orochimaru’s seal. Even Kakashi, who commented on it before, didn’t notice the difference.

  4. Thank you Matthew, this baited me into signing up. At least I didn’t need to think up a new login. I’m more curious about how his day has gone and what time it is. That and the ‘oddly respectful tone’. And if I was wondering about what the Hokage wanted to talk about, a little chat about not wanting to kill or destroy fellow Konoha shinobi (even if they don’t feel the same) might not hurt. Nah, he has more trust in Naruto’s inherent nature than that. Funny, each time I see the update meter move, I’m happy and cringe.

  5. I cringe because I’m still working on my comments for chapter 14 and it looks like I will soon be 3 chapters behind. Instead of two, which was three. But then I finished the comments on OotD. And now I’m back to 3. I’m almost tempted to ask any odd random thought that pops up about Team 8 or OotD, but it usually makes more sense with the rest of the comments.

  6. Dang the meter moved up.

This is the first time I have ever wanted the meter to stay still, cause I’m trying to write a scene for the Omake contest!

Speaking of which, how much ryo translates into a dollar? The amount seems to vary widly depending upon whoever I ask.

Still the preview seemed a bit foreboding…in a good way though. I think the smart money is on Jiryaia being called in to check the seal, but I could be wrong…

  7. A ryo was a weight roughly equivalent to 16.5 grams of gold. The coin which generally equalled a ryo’s worth of gold was the Keicho Koban. Anyway, the current price for gold per gram is $30.37 USD to one gram. So the ryo is roughly equivalent to $501.11 USD. If I’m remembering correctly, though, 10 ryo was considered a good retirement gift for a loyal retainer of a daimyo, though. So…it’s pretty much up in the air.

Anyway, here I was thinking that nothing could make me more excited for the latest chapter of Team 8, but now my head’s buzzing with possibilities as to where the plot might go and how the characters might grow.

  8. Well, seeing the meter move up is a bit…daunting. At least it’s motivating me to work faster on the Omake challenge.

And I hope that Naruto is meeting the Sandaime in order to have Jiraiya take a look at the seal. Kurenai did say that she would talk to the Sandaime to get someone who knows more about the seal to examine it and see why Naruto could talk to it, right?

Or is he meeting the Sandaime for something less…exciting? Well, no matter what you do, I can’t wait to see how it goes!

I wasn’t sure how much a ryo translates to anything so I just wrote around it. I never specify how much money he bets as it gets described later in the story in the scene between Iruka and Naruto.

  10. Hey, you better haul ass then, because I’m writing fight scenes now. And listening to Guns and Roses and Metallica while I do so.

And the translations of Ryou to Dollars is really vague. Let’s just say Iruka cleaned up, turning 1 month’s back pay into more than 10 months worth with those odds.

  11. Fight scenes? I take it they go fast for you then? Nice. The one thing I was dying to know in Chapter 15 was ‘Who is Shino’s opponent’. Not Jiraiya, not Naruto’s fight with Neji. The fallout from Hinata’s defeat was something I was curious in, though, which was sated quite fully! 🙂

But seriously, Shino’s actions in chapter 15 did make me wonder. He was fairly certain that if Naruto failed with Neji, he would get a chance at him. So that must mean he either a) doesn’t care about his opponent and is focused on Neji or b) he’s confident for a win. Driving me absolutely mad! *laugh* I’ll just wait and see.

  12. You like Metallica?! Awesome! Does it help you write your stories faster? It does for me, especially when I listen to Dyers Eve and basically the entire Master of Puppets album.

  13. Once I can visualize it, the fight scenes go really quick.

“Enter Sandman” really gets my crank turning, especially for visualizing power moves. And “Welcome to the Jungle” was looped for a good bit of this. Some of the older Linkin Park works quite well for me too.

  14. Is this the fastest that you’ve ever finished writing two chapters in a row for the same story?! It took, what, two weeks? That is simply amazing!

  15. Big difference between Betas and spell check. =/

I’m going to throw my vote for “Please refrain from killing Neji” in for whatever the Hokage wants. ^_^

  17. Even if you’re not lazy, it’s still good to have a beta. A different set of eyes scanning your work can be more likely to catch errors that you have overlooked.

  18. I’ve also been prompted into registering by this post.

I’d just like to chime in that a spellchecker really is no match for a beta. Putting plot and niggling grammatical issues aside:

You’re fic mite have sum spelling errors the checker doesn’t cache. Note that at least one of those wouldn’t have been caught by any grammar checker; thus why betas exist.

(Okay, so I had to work to create a sentence with those typos…)

  19. Another good reason to have a beta is because after you finish writing the chapter, you might not be up to editing what you just wrote.
I for one, get sick if I start editing my work right after I finish writing it. I could always wait a week after I finish writing before I start the editing, but that means that it will be another week before I update, and my updates are already far enough apart that it really isn’t worth it. With a beta, it only takes a few more days rather than more than a week for it to be posted.

  20. I remeber the first time I saw Naruto. Then looking for Fanfictions to learn more. Not knowing anything about the series, your Team 8 meant nothing to me, although I followed it for several weeks before losing interest in Naruto all together (mostly caused by all of the Yaio stories). Then came Ozzallos’ “Tales of the FoxCat”. Anything by Oz is worth reading, and I was instantly hooked. Next thing I knew I was reading the first nine books and looking at the fics again. By this time you where well into the fic (chapter six or seven, I believe), and I had a lot of reading to make up (starting at the beggining of the fic to remind myself what it was about).
Now I find myself eagerly awaiting each new chapter, and cursing the meter bar (100% Complete! Damn!! Now I have to wait too read the next chapter!)
Thanks for making a fine story and for sharing your vision with the rest of us! I for one, know it makes my day brighter!
