I started reading team 8 this summer and it wouldn’t let me sleep. You’ve written an incredible story and I’m really glad there’s a new chapter out. Great work man.
May I make a suggestion? Post an update on the word counter even if it’s only 100 words. This way, people will see that progress is being made, even if it’s only a little. It’s better than nothing, IMO.
@KurosakiIchigo, you do have a good suggestion. However, I post the word count each day when I finish writing on a chapter. There is no delay between finishing the writing process for the day and updating the progress bar, so currently it’s an honest count of the words written toward the next chapter which is zero. I’d rather be honest with the wordcount than make up numbers..
@Despicables: Hmm.. you mention that these are effects of bad karma, but they are already present in my life… I don’t drink coffee (tastes horrible), my dog sheds hair everywhere all the time, and one of our cars won’t start and has been that way for a month.
@Matthew: I would never suggest lying. I’m just saying when you do get some words written, even if it’s 10 words or 100, you could post that so that people know that you have indeed started and making progress. It gives people hope.

Leo: The stories are not going through a near-death experience. Basically, the writing happens when it happens, as you have said. That doesn’t mean that I don’t still think about and work toward completing the stories. It’s just not going to be fast.
I agree with Leo and KuroskIchigo (that’s quite a name, BTW:), writing is not something you can order yourself to do…if the Muse ain’t willing, the keys don’t click! I’d love to read the continuation of NOFP as much as every one of you HP diehards, but give Matt some space…he’s sharing his talent with us for free! Send him Kuddos and fill up his tip jar! Once he’s independently wealthy, and his Muse is thoroughly sated, he will write again! In the meantime, reread NOTP for the tenth time…that’s what I do when my Muse is on her usual drunken binge at some bar in the outback.

JUST got done with Chapter 22. I started this fic almost a year ago. Gotta say, AMAZING job! In many ways, this is richer, deeper, and better than the source material (and I don’t think ANYONE ever thought they’d be able to say that about a fan fiction)! While I’d love to see an update within the next year, I understand that you’ve got a LOT on your plate, and this project may not even be your favorite one. So the update will come when it comes. All I gotta say is it’s been a fun, beautiful ride so far! Thanks for sharing it with the masses, Matthew, and keep up the good work!
Matt, I have a question regarding your ah… Writing. If one or more people were to donate specific amounts of money at a time, would that serve as more motivation to go towards writing chapters? I understand that you have a job to hold down, and that you don’t like being rushed by people who don’t sign your paychecks.
It’s just that I’ve read and re-read NOFP and Team 8 so many times, I can just about recall the textual contents of the chapters by name and number, verbatim. I’d like to find a way to benefit your financial situation, while helping to see more updates. If you’re amenable to this, I believe it would be a great way for people to have more motivation to put money in your tip jar. Have a finite goal set towards the completion of the next chapter, or whatever you will.
I fail to see how you can say that you are working on NOFP when you haven’t made any progress on it whatsoever since you posted saying that you were starting work on the next chapter of NOFP, all the way back on September 7th of 2013. It has been exactly 138 days, or 4 months and 16 days since then.
In that time I have written 3 chapters, posted 2 of them, and then completely revamped those same 3 chapters, on my own Harry Potter Fan Fic. I can understand having writers block. I get it myself sometimes… but at least post a full blog explaining what the hold up is. We deserve to know why it is you haven’t updated the Word Count in over four months after having said that you were working on the story. I mean it’s not like you are introducing a crap ton of original characters into the universe the way I am. You are working with more or less quantified characters. They shouldn’t be all that hard for you to write.

I am a quite recent fan of yours, Matthew, so I don’t really know about your personal troubles. They are occasionally referred to on this site, and whatever they are, I am sorry. You should be a professional writer.
But if you happen to read this, may I make a suggestion? Instead of leaving your fans staring at the progress bar not moving for half a year, maybe you should publish a small note each month? That’s the system the author of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (the second most favourited HP fanfic on FF.net after HPNOFP) uses, and it seems to work quite well. If you don’t want to go into depth in the notes, that’s okay, a little remark about what is currently holding up the writing would suffice. Just tell us whether it’s a lack of free time or writer’s block, nobody will be angry at you. If you feel that you want to take a break from writing for such and such a period of time, just admit it, no serious fan will hate you for that.
But please, give us some regular updates, even if there is no progress. Anything is better than the current silence, which makes us worry for you.
I like Leo’s suggestion of publishing a small note each month explaining what is going on on your end would be great, we don’t need long elaborate explanations, but something to let us know you still exist and are planning to write more should suffice.
And I agree, no one here is angry, I apologize for the tones I took in my previous post, but I was just trying to express that I was a little annoyed that you had not posted an update, nor apparently written anything in the chapter for several months. I do apologize for taking that tone though.
Suffice to say that I am looking forward to the next chapter with great anticipation and would very much hope that you will at the very least post an update to tell us what is holding you up, especially since you haven’t said a word on this blog for around 5 months. Joey is one of those rabidly obsessed readers, I gather. So am I, I suppose, but I sure as hell wouldn’t call you a sadist due to displeasure and impatience. Naruto recently ended, and this fanfic is one of the best written I’ve ever read. I needed something to fill the hole in my heart, and this story did the job. I binge read it all, and I have to say, I will be excitedly waiting for the next chapter! Amazingly well done. Deal with your real life responsibilities first always, and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty because they feel like they have a right to demand things from you. That being said, I wish you the best! This is definitely going in both my faves and my story alert!
