Writing Progress

Just to let everyone know – no stories have been abandoned. I am, however, going to move away from the strictly alternating scheme I’ve been doing. To put it simply – I have several scenes in each story that I’m trying to work out in my head. When I arrive at the optimal solution for that scene, I’m going to write that sucker down before I forget it. Some scenes flow like water, others flow like concrete.

What I will probably do with the meter going forward, is use it to indicate whichever story is closest to being updated. I wish the old meter I had that did multiple bars was updated for the new version of wordpress!

  1. Sounds good to me. My only question is this: Does this writing-for-all-stories-at-once thing include The Blackwand Chronicles? (I rather enjoyed that one.) Anyway, as long as progress is being made, I can’t complain (not that I would anyway, since I’m not paying anything for it).

  2. I used to follow your Harry Potter story religiously and didn’t care much for Naruto; but like I’ve said a lot of times before, I’ve done a complete turn aobut, I’m only interested in the Naruto one at the moment, you’ve completely changed me into an anime dork Lol.
You and one other author are the best in this fandom in my opinion and I can’t wait for the remaining 78 percent to be completed;)
    Happy writing

  3. I’m more like ditte mai (ditte dance?), only I’m still mostly in the HP guild. However, being an author myself, I can understand and appreciate the love that is writer’s cramp, and the scrapped chapter that results from having forced it. That being said, I shall await the next story update (for HP, that is)! 😀

  4. I just had to come over here and tell you that I love your writing. You write realistically and you don’t shirk the finer points of grammar and spelling. I am so, totally hooked on your “Team 8” story.

Thank you for sharing your writing!

  5. Does anybody play tapes any more? Come to that does anybody mime? My interests run to HP stories so that is what I am waiting for. Thanks for writing. W.

  7. Have you been writing on other stuff all this time? Original novels? Or has the writing overall just slowed down (a lot) due to time commitments? Just curious.

  9. Randomly alternating between the stories you write is probably the best thing you can do, especially when you write several stories in each their specific ‘verse.

I can tell, it’s because I write my own fanfiction stories, yet they’re not quite as good as yours.

I hope to see the next update of Team 8 or HPNOFP coming along soon!

P.S. Sometimes, reading other fanfics and listening to music (both old, familiar songs and ‘fresh’ ones (aka being on the lookout for potential favorites)) / watching AMV’s on youtube can help inspire you for particularly challenging scenes. But I’m sure you knew that already ^^.

  10. Gotta say; your Naruto story is Kick. Ass. I am a grammar nazi at heart, and it makes me so incredibly happy that you actually care about it.

But, I do like the plot line you have going, and I really do wish Naruto had been placed on team 8 in the anime/manga. He’d have been SO much better off, I think. It is what attracted me to this story.

It’s too bad you had to kill off Kurenai…makes me wonder how the team will take it.

    Best of luck to you!

  11. Really loving your work!
Please take your time until you think its ready. I am usually impatience but oddly enough I can’t get bored reading and rereading it over and over again. I’ve read it four times so far, though I did came late on the train. Also liked “Out of the Darkness”

  13. A big hello to Viridian the author of HP FoNP. I dunno i this is the right section or whether you’ll actually read it. A five up to singal you did would be great. I started to read your HP fanfic. Very impressive i must say. Prop’s to your talent and a thank you for sharing your remarkable story with us.

Well, now that i got the emotionally stuffy thing out of the way let’s get to the heart why i wish to write to you (i mean besides sucking up and patting your back for your ongoing good job on the HP fanfiction).

I read some of your comments below your chap’s and wanted to comment on them. I recommend to forgoe the fact than in the canon Snape was working undercover for Dumbledore and both of them killed as a result (according to your comment ^^). Well, you can introduce it as a fact… but i would not bend over backwards to introduce things discovered in the DH canon. Your story is able to on its own. Rather i recommend to keep it post HBP and let your original imagination continue run wild. (My words may already give it away, but i like the idea of painting Snape as a simple backstabber and deceiver rather than a double agent).

Second, your style changed rather drastically in the later chapters (30+ me thinks). When your characters talk you started using Fullstop “.” a lot. My guess was that it is meant as break in speech, like a hesitation or rethinking or other emotions forcing someone to make a slight stop on speech. However, how shall i put. you. overuse… the fullstop. At times it. makes it. hard. to read. The oringinal idea may have been nice, and is fitting at times, but compared to the beginning it makes it rahter worse. Well. in my opinion at least.

Third, rather a question of curiosity and personal taste. Why do use hols, rather than holidays? where does it stem from, which region of the world, cus it’s the first time i read it.

Fourth now that i actually visited your blog, where is the HP meter?

Fifth, a simple question. I know you are constricted for time and do this in your free time. But how long does it usually take until you finished a chapter (rough av. estimate). I stumbled upon your fanfic last week so i do not know, and am rather laazy ^^. Also, something to consider the more people push for one to publish something the more the thing is appreciated and sought after. No one complains for uninteresting things to get published. Thus i join the merry band of your story followers and badger you to publish the next chap ^^.

Your work is amazing and more than appreciated. Appreciated seems rather inadequate. Looking forward to your progress, hoping your fiction will continue to blossom.

  14. I just wanted to say that I am extremely enthralled and addicted to your HP fanfiction. The plot line of Harry going back in time is extremely creative and allows for you to basically re-write the entire series. (which you have done magnifiscently so far.) I found your story through Phoenixsong and have read every bit so far. This is my first trip to this site and I am excited to see that you have many other stories to choose from. I hope to begin them as well.
I was curious if you had a rough idea of how many chapters you see Nightmare’s winding up being? I am interested in whether you are going to take Harry through all his years at Hogwarts or if he is going to meet the dark lord sooner?
Well, again I just want you to know how much I am enjoying this story and can’t wait for more!
    Keep up the good work!

As I once wrote – I’m all for your story “jumping” at least if it include Blackwand Chronicles. 😉

  16. MutantRancor: The stories actively being worked on are Team 8 and NOFP. When one or both of these really large stories are finished, the others will get some update love.

Jaya: The progress bar only has space for one story to be updated at a time. It’s a widget and can’t be installed twice in WordPress. The old one no longer works with the updated version of WordPress. Generally, Matthew is only working on one chapter at a time, however, so the progress bar is accurate in that respect.

Joker82: Hols is british slang for holidays. Regarding the progress meter, see the response above to Jaya. Matthew couldn’t estimate the average time it takes to update a chapter. It depends on how easily it flows.

Judicator: Not sure yet on how many books will be included.

Andrew: Yes, NOFP will be finished eventually.

David: Matthew does not have a rough idea of how many chapters it will take to finish the story.

Exactly what I hoped to see. I do hope that NoFP will be finished one day … it’s just too good to leave as it is.

  18. Why is everybody so “completely enthralled” and “compelled to give a big thumbs up” and so long and so forth? Well, a couple of years back I would have been in the same crowd. With much regret I have to say there is only disapointment left. At the pace of one chapter per year, at around 10k words, I do not see any chance that I will still be alive at the time you complete this story… and it did make me sad at some point. I learned to live with sadness, and I didn’t learn it from you. You aren’t even the first author who doesn’t “abandon any story”… and practically does exactly that.
Please understand that this comment is not born out of anger or anything like that. Yes, I do understand that people change, interests change, and all that. Actually, I think it is completely unrealistical to expect anybody to keep the same interests and hobbies and writing style over several years.
However, it is also not true that just because I do not pay money to read your story, I get it for free. I think I did invest quite a bit of time, feelings, interest, emotions and the such. And giving up on it had cost me a bit. Sure, it wasn’t money, but nonetheless I paid some price of sorts.
I believe the moment you start posting a story (even more so when it is a good story) you create a sort of gentlemen’s agreement between you and your readers. And I did feel let down by you. As I said, I got over that feeling. But I would have liked to see this sorty completed.
Do you see the diferrence in quality between the first chapters and the latest ones? It shows me without doubt that you have lost interest in this story and, even though I am sure you have the best intentions, it is very likely you will never finish it. I am not talking about technical quality, like grammar or narrative technique. In the first several chapters I felt passion, enthusiasm, energy, and it attracted me. I did not feel any of those in the latest couple of chapters. I feel it has become a “technicality”, a mechanical filling of blanks in a storyline that has been written years back, lacking the spark that existed in the begining.
Please, do not take it as a flame or something like that. Obviously, it is your story and you can do whatever you choose with it. I am just sad.
Oh, yeah, all ths is about NOFP. I have no idea who is Naruto and have no intentions to find out.
Thanks for the space you gave me to rant.

  19. I stumbed across Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Future’s Past and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I was wondering if you had any idea when the next chapter would come out because there isn’t a progress bar, and I would like make sure you did plan on completing it still.

    Thanks!

  26. The only thing I will say about your HP fanfic is that I am surprised that I have been reading it for so many years – it honestly feels *much fresher* in my mind! I realize that you are not getting paid to do any of this, so we can’t do anything other than say, “Please, when you are bored with your other projects, please don’t neglect your loyal fanbase!” 🙂

  27. I am Harry Potter addicted. Since reading ”Nightmares” I have looked for other stories with a similar style. As it has been a full YEAR since this story was updated (I had it on alert), I was wondering if I should keep hoping for another chapter or give it up as a bad seed. Can you inform me how I should procede?

  28. I have to say at times I don’t know whether I should be completely over joyed that I stumbled upon your works or annoyed that I now prefer rereading your pieces over J. K. Rowling’s masterpiece. Both NOFP and Blackwand Chronicles have left me in awe. I am excited for any new development that you might add to either of these pieces and I would like to thank you for your hard work!

  29. Hey, I just wanted to drop a comment. I absolutely love your HP & the Nightmares of Futures Past story. I’ve read a few other HP stories, and while I enjoy them, yours takes the cake… I might even prefer it to the canon stories. I really hope that NOFP will be finished at some point. It would be sad to have to leave such a wonderful story left untold.

  30. Hi, Matthew, I just want to say that I’m reading (or I guess I should say RE-reading) Nightmares of Future’s Past, and I was wondering when/if you will be adding another chapter to it (and I can see that I’m not alone in this wondering). Please, let us know? thanks

  31. … I have seen many comments about NoFP. It has not been updated since 2009, if I am not mistaken. Expect many a follow up reviews and comments on this, as this is one of my favorite HP FF and it slightly pisses me off that it is so behind. (Although I am a bit of a hypocrite… But I do give valid reasons to my reviewers, and I never just abandon my story without a word, which is what it looked like you did.)

  34. Hi, currently reading NOFP, and loving it! Not finished yet though.
However, it seems that you aren’t either! It’s been almost two years since you updated, and I’m just wondering, have you any plans to finish it?
I can understand if you’re too busy to complete it (the story is taking long enough to READ), but I’m just wondering, if you can’t finish it, please could you let me know, if you can. I’m ‘don’tblameme33’ on fanfiction.
Once again, I love the story!
    Thanks.
